INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team dialed up its second shutout of the 2019 season and junior Cameron Petersen blasted home a restart in the game's 50th minute as the Jaguars snapped a three-game skid with a 1-0 win over Cincinnati on Tuesday night (Oct. 22). Head coach Brian Barnett utilized a starting lineup that included just two upperclassmen and no seniors, but Petersen, making a rare start in the defensive third, made his impact felt with the game-winner.

"During the recent stretch of really tough games, we lost our way in that regard," Barnett said. "We made a decision as a coaching staff that there was a way to get that back and that was through putting some more pace in the front part of our group so that we could go and press them higher up the field and turn them over and generate some momentum that way.

"More or less, we wanted to find that strength again."

After a rocky opening couple minutes, the Jags put together one of their best performances of the season in terms of possession and attacking play. Matthew Skaar and Landon Malott helped the Jaguars generate attack from the flanks, while earning a pair of early corner kicks. Despite both sides finding pockets and creases with which to work, neither team was particularly dangerous in the final third in the opening 45 minutes.

UC (5-8-1) had a precious opportunity go by the boards when sophomore goalkeeper Quinn McCallion authored his most impressive stop of the night in the game's 48th minute. The Bearcats were awarded a penalty kick after a foul occurred just inside the penalty area, but McCallion pounced on Creggton Charlton's attempt, and smothered the attempt from there without yielding a rebound. Less than three minutes later, IUPUI cashed in on a far less favorable opportunity.

In this instance, IUPUI earned a free kick roughly 25 yards from frame and Petersen ripped a right-footed attempt through traffic, past UC goalkeeper Noah Lawrence for his first career goal.

The Jaguars defense, missing the team's top two players in terms of minutes played in Gianni Catenacci and Tommy Patacca, stood tall and limited UC to just eight total shots and two shots on frame. McCallion made both stops, including the PK save early in the second half. He lowered his goals against average to 1.25 on the season while recording his sixth career shutout.

Riley Shives led the IUPUI attack with a pair of shots, including an attempt early in the match that Lawrence pushed just wide of the post.

The win snapped a four-game losing streak to Cincinnati as the Jags had lost every meeting between the two schools since a 3-2 double overtime win over the Bearcats back in 2014.

The Jaguars will continue the current four-game homestand on Saturday, Oct. 26 when they host UIC at 1:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium. That contest will air on ESPN3 as Greg Rakestraw (pxp) describes the action.
