CHARLESTON, Ill. - The IUPUI men's soccer team, which has made a habit of last second heroics so far this season, was unable to come up with another magic trick on Tuesday (Oct. 1) as the Jaguars fell on the road at Eastern Illinois, 1-0. EIU's Maxwell Allen got loose on a breakaway and netted the game-winner in the game's 75th minute off an assist from Cameron Behm.
"It's a disappointing result for our group today," head coach
Brian Barnett said. "As always, Eastern Illinois was a fantastic opponent. They defended well and really limited our dangerous goal scoring opportunities.
"That's exactly it for us moving forward - we need to be more consistently dangerous in the attacking half."
The match was largely even throughout with EIU (4-4-1) capitalizing on a quick counter late in the contest to earn the result.
IUPUI had scoring chances, including a
Landon Malott fire on frame in the 37th minute that was stopped by EIU keeper Jonathan Burke. At the start of the second half, freshman
Luke Liljegren had a drive knocked down, resulting in a corner kick. However, IUPUI was called for a foul inside the penalty box on the ensuing corner.
IUPUI sophomore goalkeeper
Quinn McCallion was strong in net for the Jags and was beneficiary of a team save in the 50th minute when a teammate cleared a Jonas Castelhano attempt off the line to keep the game tied. In the 60th minute, a Liljegren yellow card gave EIU (4-4-1) a restart in prime territory, but McCallion made a save on a drive from Shady Omar, pushing the shot aside.
However, EIU ultimately found the winner and the Jags were unable to get equal in the game's closing minutes.
Riley Shives put an attempt on target in the closing seconds, prompting Burke to make his second and final save of the match.
McCallion finished the match with five saves, matching his season high. Offensively, Shives and freshman
Kirezi Freddy had a team-high two shots each as IUPUI was outshot 9-8 overall and 7-2 on goal.
IUPUI will return to Horizon League play on Friday when the Jaguars take on Milwaukee at 8:00 p.m. Eastern in a match that will be aired on ESPN3.
