INDIANPOLIS –IUPUI women's basketball hosted over 500 school kids for the Jags first Class on the Court and IUPUI put on a show with an 82-47 win over Detroit Mercy.
The Jags (9-7, 3-2 Horizon) had four players finish in double-figures led by
Macee Williams who scored 19 points in just 20 minutes, shooing 8-for-9 from the field.
Holly Hoopingarner and
Katelyn O'Reilly each finished with 14 and
Brittany Welch had a career-high with 13 points.
"Macee [Williams] did a great job of getting offensive rebounds and we got her a few good looks," said head coach
Austin Parkinson. "I joked with our team before the game, let's make sure we don't forget where number 50 is at."
IUPUI dominated Detroit Mercy (2-13, 0-4 Horizon) on the glass finishing with a season-high 54 rebounds and allowing the Titans to pull down just 29. The Jaguars finished the game with 30 offensive boards, also a season-high. In just 12 minutes of action, Welch also grabbed a career-best eight rebounds and led IUPUI with six on the offensive end. Both
Morgan Allen and
Allex Brown were just behind Welch with five offensive rebounds apiece. For the game, O'Reilly led the team in rebounds with nine and Williams pulled down seven.
Many of those rebounds came from long rebound opportunities as the Jags exploited holes in the Detroit Mercy zone defense after hoisting a program record 42 three point opportunities. Sydney shot a career-high 13 threes, hitting two, and Hoopingarner also shot double-digit threes, going 4-for-10 from deep.
The Jags turned those misses in to points, scoring 26 second chance points, the highest total of the season for IUPUI. The Jaguars also took advantage of a physical Detroit Mercy defense getting to the free throw line a season-high 28 times and hitting a season-best 21. O'Reilly led the way at the stripe, going 5-for-6 while Welch and Allen both hit four.
"We wanted to make sure we took good shots, which we did," said Parkinson. "Anytime you face a zone there are going to be massive holes for rebounding. It is just about effort and our ladies had that effort and it was rewarded with extra possessions.
IUPUI also shared the ball well, dishing out 20 assists. It was the third game of the season reaching the 20-assist mark for IUPUI. The Jags were led by a career-high eight assists by
Agatha Beier and Hoopingarner finished with five.
Midway through the first quarter, with the score tied at eight, Williams took over with four-straight points and after five points by O'Reilly, a buzzer-beating layup by Williams put the Jags up 19-9.
IUPUI continued to pull away from the Titans in the second quarter going up 13 after another jumper by Williams. After Detroit Mercy got to within 10, the Jags responded with a 10-0 run to take control of the game. Sims began the run with a three and capped the run with a free throw. In between Williams had a layup and Hoopingarner hit one from deep. Hoopingarner hit another three to put the Jags up 21 and Williams finished the quarter with two free throws to bring her halftime total to 17 with the Jags leading 39-16.
The 17 points Detroit Mercy scored in the first half was a season-low for a Jaguar opponent and IUPUI allowed just 27 percent shooting in the opening half and just 30 percent for the entire game. IUPUI also forced 21 turnovers, the most since forcing 23 against Purdue Northwest in the season opener.
"I think our defense was good," said Parkinson. "We understood that they are not a great three-point shooting team so we wanted to stop the basketball and forced 15 turnovers in the first half. I thought we had the right frame of mind defensively."
Detroit Mercy began the second half with a free throw but IUPUI scored eight-straight capped by a three-point play from O'Reilly to reach a 30-point lead for the first time in the game. Welch scored her first basket of the game to start the fourth quarter, hitting a three and followed it with a layup to give IUPUI its largest lead of 38. Welch led all bench scorers as the Jags finished with 21 points off of the bench, the highest mark since the first game of the season.
All three meetings against Detroit Mercy since the Jags have joined the Horizon League have been decided by at least 28 points.
IUPUI remains home with a clash against Oakland inside the Jungle at 2 p.m. on Sunday (Jan. 13).
