INDIANAPOLIS - Redshirt freshman
Fernando Borges sent the home folks happy with a memorable first career goal on Saturday (Sept. 29) as the Jaguars outlasted Oakland in Horizon League play, 1-0 in double overtime at Carroll Stadium. Borges took a pass from junior
Pedro Valladao and angled a shot just inside the far post for his first-ever score, igniting a full team celebration at the corner flag across the field.
"It was surreal," Borges said. "The whole team put in all the effort. We took it to overtime and kept it close. Pedro had that last second pass to me and I'm just glad I could help the team at the end. It's a big win for us and we're just trying to move forward with this one and keep this momentum going."
Borges' goal capped another banner day for
Quinn McCallion and the defense as the Jags recorded a third shutout of the season and snapped a four-game skid. Both McCallion and OU (5-3-2, 1-2 HL) keeper Sullivan Lauderdale were busy throughout the day as a game that ended with a single goal felt more like a free wheeling offensive affair. The two sides combined on 34 shots and 20 corner kicks and both teams left counting missed opportunities that could've made them winners in regulation.
In the first half, McCallion did well to punch a Nebojsa Popovic attempt off the crossbar in the 27th minute and IUPUI (2-6-2, 2-2 HL) senior forward
Sean Siasia had a header on the doorstep in the 38th minute that Lauderdale pushed away.
Oakland dominated possession to start the second half, preventing IUPUI from getting anything in their half of the field. Things evened out as the half wore on with both sides getting really good looks at certain points. McCallion made a brilliant diving stop to stonewall Noah Jensen in the 86th minute on the heels of his hitting a free kick right at the IUPUI keeper in the 82nd minute.
Junior
Alan Aguilar had back-to-back attempts that nearly broke the ice as well as he had a shot cleared off the line in the 78th minute and another attempt stopped by Lauderdale less than a minute later.
Ultimately, Valladao shifted a pass out to the right side to Borges, who rolled a shot in front of Lauderdale and just inside the post for the winner, bringing IUPUI back to .500 in league play.
"I'm super proud of them and I couldn't be happier that we were able to get the three points today. That was massive for us," head coach
Brian Barnett said. "I'm happy for us to be able to get the result."
It was the Jaguars' fifth overtime match of the season and the first overtime win after having suffered a pair of setbacks in extra time. IUPUI attempted a season-high 18 shots and outshot their opposition for the first time all season.
Riley Shives and
Tommy Patacca had a team-high three shots each while 10 different IUPUI players had at least one attempt.
McCallion made four saves in his third career shutout.
The win was IUPUI's first over Oakland since the 2010 season as the Jags had been blanked in the last five meetings in the all-time series since then.
The Jaguars will continue the four-game homestand on Tuesday night (Oct. 2) when they host SIUE at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
