INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team dropped a home heartbreaker on Tuesday night (Oct. 2) as the Jaguars allowed a goal with 2:10 left in regulation to SIUE to fall 2-1 on the home pitch. Lachlan McLean powered home his fifth goal of the year to send SIUE (7-1-2) to the victory while IUPUI (2-7-2) suffered another late game defeat. Joergen Pettersen slid a cross through the Jaguars' six-yard box and after an errant clearance, McLean drove a point blank shot past freshman
Quinn McCallion for the winner.
"Credit to SIUE. It came down to one player having the creativity to see our high line and loop a ball over our backs to make a play happen," head coach
Brian Barnett said. "They made the most of their chances and that was the difference in the game. We certainly had our chances and we did capitalize on one, but goals change games and maybe if we capitalize on a second one, it changes the complexion of the entire game from there.
"I'm proud of our guys for going toe-to-toe with an upper echelon opponent from the MAC. We had our chances but hats off to them."
SIUE struck in the game's 20th minute when Keegan McHugh cleaned up some loose change in the Jaguars' box and blasted a left-footed drive through traffic for the game's first goal. The Cougars maintained the lead for less than two minutes before junior
Alan Aguilar netted the equalizer.
The veteran midfielder arched a header just out of Noah Heim's reach after
Corey Goede's long throw-in skipped off a defender to Aguilar in the middle of a scrum.
While SIUE built more chances by volume, both sides definitely had opportunities ahead of the Cougars' late winner. The Cougars closed with a 15-8 shot advantage and 6-2 edge on shots on goal.
Goede just missed tallying his first career goal in the 34th minute when he pushed a header just wide of target after getting on the receiving end of a
Seth Vang header. In the second half, it was freshman attacker
Riley Shives that had the Jaguars' best two scoring chances. In the 65th minute, Shives hit a shot high of target from distance. In the 78th minute, Shives intercepted a pass near midfield and was off to the races on a breakaway. He got within striking distance and put a breakaway attempt on frame, forcing SIUE keeper Noah Heim to go to the ground to make his lone stop of the night.
SIUE's best chance prior to getting the winner came in the 74th minute when Jorge Gonzalez weaved and muscled his way through a pack of defenders before unloading a shot from roughly 20 yards out. McCallion was able to make the stop without incident for one of his four saves.
IUPUI will return to Horizon League play on Saturday night (Oct. 6) when the Jaguars host Milwaukee at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. That match will be broadcast on ESPN+ as Morgan Adcock (pxp) is on the call.
