INDIANAPOLIS - Junior midfielder
Alan Aguilar scored a goal for the second time in as many games and freshman goalkeeper
Quinn McCallion dialed up his fourth shutout of the season as the Jaguars picked off Milwaukee on a rainy Saturday night at Carroll Stadium, 1-0. Aguilar redirected a brilliant header past Milwaukee's Freddy Lorenzen in the game's 69th minute, courtesy of a
Fernando Borges assist to push IUPUI to 3-2 in Horizon League play.
"It was sensational," head coach
Brian Barnett said. "We had a great crowd, so I'm super appreciative of all those Jags that came out here and made some noise for the team and encouraged our guys through. We were certainly under pressure throughout the night from a quality Milwaukee side who came in here undefeated in the [Horizon] league and coming off a tie in the midweek against a Big Ten opponent in Wisconsin and had a really solid winning record for the year."
The IUPUI (3-7-2, 3-2 HL) defense was its usual steady self, keyed by McCallion's eight saves while facing 23 Milwaukee (6-4-2, 2-1-1 HL) shots.
After a lengthy weather delay just after kickoff, IUPUI just missed going ahead early when senior
Sam Gavin drove a free kick off the crossbar in the game's 13th minute. Aside from that, Milwaukee dominated possession in the opening half, primarily behind Vuk Latinovich and Evan Conway. Conway tested McCallion with a drive that was earmarked for inside the near post, only to see the Jaguars' netminder dive right to punch the shot away in the 26th minute.
Freshman
Landon Malott put a late tester on frame in the 43rd minute, forcing Lorenzen to make a brilliant diving stop to keep the Jags off the board.
IUPUI ultimately broke through midway through the second half when Borges connected with Aguilar as the Jaguars netted a goal in the fourth straight game. Aguilar beat his man to the penalty spot and got on the end of Borges' first assist of the year, redirecting a shot to Lorenzen's right for the winner. Aguilar went 44 straight games to open his career without a goal before scoring goals in the past two games.
"Sometimes Alan may have his faults on the attacking side of the ball, but there's one thing that the kid is going to do - he's going to work box-to-box and cover every inch of the center of the field that he needs to to win challenges and get into tackles. As the season's gone on, he's gotten sharper in attack, he's gotten better on the ball and as a result, he's been rewarded the last two games with goals," Barnett said.
"It was glorifying. It was what we needed at the time and I'm glad that I had enough energy to make the run from the midfield across the first defender and get the head on," Aguilar said.
The Jaguars did well to kill the game from there, burning time, particularly as Milwaukee fired wildly from distance, leading to goal kicks. Freshman
Riley Shives just missed adding late insurance as Malott set him free on a breakaway, only to have the shot gobbled up by Lorenzen in the final minute.
Defensively, McCallion matched his season-high with eight saves while facing 20 or more shots for the fourth time this season. Aguilar and Malott finished with a team-high two shots apiece while Latinovich attempted a game-high six shots.
The win was IUPUI's first-ever over Milwaukee in four chances.
IUPUI vaulted to third in the Horizon League standings with nine points in league play and trails Wright State and UIC by just a single point. The Jaguars return to action on Tuesday night (Oct. 9) when they host Bowling Green at 7:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium.
