INDIANAPOLIS - Coming in riding back-to-back shutouts, the IUPUI women's soccer team will host Youngstown State on Senior Day this Saturday (Sept. 28) at 1:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium. Tickets are good for both the women's match against YSU and the men's match against Oakland University that is scheduled to kickoff at 4:00 p.m.. The women's game will be streamed on ESPN3 as Scott Agness (pxp) is on the call.
IUPUI (3-6-3, 1-1-1 HL) will honor seniors
Jessica Flores,
Braegan Lyon,
Leah Minnette,
Becca Spitalniak and
Denise Veldman before the game, beginning at 12:40 p.m., as the five individuals will be joined on the field by their families and recognized for their contributions. On the field, head coach
Chris Johnson's squad got a much needed league and road win on Wednesday night at UIC, thanks in part to a late goal from freshman forward
Elizabeth Bueckers.
Bueckers netted her second career goal off assists from
Miranda Ricks and Lyon, redirecting a header into the left side of the net to help the Jaguars' shutout stand. Defensively, IUPUI has been stout of late as junior goalkeeper
Sophia Lipka has registered her 14th and 15th career clean sheets in the past seven days. IUPUI has yielded just five goals in the past five games and three goals in three Horizon League games.
For the season, Ricks continues to lead the squad in scoring (2 goals, 5 assists) and Bueckers is now second on the team with five points (2 goals, 1 assist). Lipka has played more than 200 straight minutes without allowing a goal, dropping her goals against average to 1.32 while raising her save percentage to .781. The back line has been anchored by a collection of players with
Natalie McNally and
Jenna Sterr leading the group in minutes played.
QUOTABLE: "I was really pleased with the effort. (UIC) tried to put our backs under pressure, but Jill and Jenna got up the field and helped us out a little bit. I thought Emma and Morgan in the midfield were pretty good and did a good job of winning balls for us and getting us going the right direction. Defensively, I thought we did a good job of keeping them in front and really keeping them in check," Johnson said after the win at UIC.
SCOUTING YSU: Youngstown State is 1-9-2 and 0-3 in Horizon League play for first year head coach Brian Shrum. The Penguins have been held to three goals scored on the season and been shutout in 10 of their 12 outings. YSU opened the season with a 2-2 double overtime draw with Chicago State and earned a 1-0 win over Canisius during their season-opening four-game homestand. They've since been blanked eight straight times, going 0-7-1 during that span. Kate McEachern has played the bulk of the team's minutes in goal, registering a 1.90 GAA and .742 save percentage, which includes a pair of shutouts. She's played 805 of the team's 1,120 minutes in net.
INSIDE THE SERIES: IUPUI is 7-0 all-time against Youngstown State and 3-0 in matches played in Indy. IUPUI won last year's meeting in Youngstown, 2-0, as
Hayley Shelton and Flores netted goals and Lipka made three saves in the shutout.
NEXT UP: IUPUI will head to Illinois State for a non-conference game on Monday night (Oct. 1) at 6:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN+.
