LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The IUPUI men's cross country team will run against stiff competition this Saturday (Sept. 29) when the Jaguars compete in Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park. IUPUI will run in the men's Gold Race at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.
The same course at Sawyer Park hosted the 2012, 2015 and 2017 NCAA D1 National Championships and 2010 and 2014 NCAA D2 National Championships. IUPUI will be running the event for the second straight year after placing 14th of 30 teams at last year's meet.
David Ehlers led the way placing 76th against a stout field, clocking a time of 24:53.16. Behind him,
Abiel Mogos ran 25:00.00 and
Jeremy Breedlove crossed at 25:08.12.
Ben Savage and
Jacob Stamm rounded out the Jaguars' top five while
Roman Jennings,
Jarit Perkins and
Eric Hoffman were also among the Jaguars' nine-man lineup.
"I think the guys will be ready to go," head coach
Chuck Koeppen said. "We've got a good group of guys and they've been training really hard since the meet in Wisconsin. I think they were happy with getting the win up there, but they know they're capable of more and will keep getting better. The strength of this group is in our depth and we've got a lot of guys fighting to be in the front of our pack. We had a lot of guys run this meet last year, so they know what to expect and know there will be some pretty good teams down there. We're focusing on running how we can run and let the rest take care of itself.
"It'll be a fun weekend and a lot of good racing going on down there."
IUPUI will run against a field that includes nationally ranked Middle Tennessee and two schools just outside the Top 30 in Campbell and Eastern Kentucky this week. This year's squad is coming off a meet win at the Vic Godfrey Open as they breezed past a field that included Marquette, Kansas State and Loyola. Three Jags earned top-10 finishes as Savage was the top collegiate finisher in a time of 25:42.1. Perkins was just off his pace in third at 25:45.4 and Hoffman was fifth overall at 25:48.8.
Stamm, Breedlove and
Alex Ratkovich all just missed top-10 finishes, placing 11th, 12th and 13th respectively with a four second gap among them. Stamm closed at 26:09.7 and Breedlove and Ratkovich were nearly side-by-side at 26:13.2 and 26:13.5.
That group will be joined by Jennings,
Brooks Long,
Jake McCullough and
Dustin Starnes this weekend.
IUPUI comes in ranked No. 14 in the Great Lakes Region, having moved up a spot this past week despite having not run since Sept. 8. The Jags have defeated 94 percent of their opposition this season with the lone blemish having come against Butler in the season opening meet.
A full recap and results will be posted to IUPUIJags.com immediately after Saturday's event.
