JAGS TO HEAD TO UIC FOR MIDWEEK LEAGUE CONTEST

Jaguars enter play 0-1-1 in Horizon League play

9/25/2018 9:17:00 PM

CHICAGO - The IUPUI will hit the Windy City on Wednesday night (Sept. 26) trying to get a first Horizon League win and first road win of the 2018 campaign. The Jaguars will kickoff against UIC (2-9, 1-1 HL) at 7:00 p.m. Central (8 Eastern) in a match streamed on ESPN3.

UIC has won two of their past three outings while IUPUI (2-6-3, 0-1-1 HL) has gone winless in three straight since a 1-0 shutout of Evansville on Sept. 9. The Jaguars are coming off a 0-0 double overtime draw with Detroit Mercy this past Saturday as junior goalkeeper Sophia Lipka was named Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week for her play in goal.

The IUPUI offense has been lackluster through the first half of the season as the Jaguars have mustered just five goals in nine games against Division I competition. The Jags have five additional goals in games with Marian University and Taylor University. Sophomore Miranda Ricks has two goals and four assists while both Emma Chambers and Natalie McNally have a goal and two assists each. Chambers has IUPUI's lone goal in league play, coming in the Jags' 3-1 loss at Cleveland State on the road.

QUOTABLE: "I'm definitely proud (of the shutout). I thought we did a good job of keeping them in front of us most the day. We had a great play by Bri Denny in the first overtime, where she came in and made a game saving tackle at that point in time. Other than that, we didn't give them too many good looks at the goal. I thought defensively Natalie McNally stepped in and won a lot of balls before plays got really dangerous. Jenna and Jill did a good job on the outsides and it was good play all around from a defensive standpoint for sure," head coach Chris Johnson said after the Jaguars' shutout of Detroit Mercy on Saturday.

HOMECOMING: Wednesday night's match at UIC is a homecoming of sorts for the Jaguars' three Illinois-natives, Renae Blevins, Natalie McNally and Jillian Steinbrink. Blevins is from a west suburb of Chicago in Plainfield, Ill., while McNally's hometown of Grayslake, Ill., is just north of Chicago. Steinbrink is from just north of the city as well as she's from Long Grove, Ill.

SATURDAY SENIOR DAY: The IUPUI women's soccer program will recognize the senior class of Jessica Flores, Braegan Lyon, Leah Minnette, Becca Spitalniak and Denise Veldman following Saturday's game with Youngstown State. Because the game is the front half of a doubleheader, one ticket will provide fans entry to both the women's match and the subsequent men's match with Oakland.

SCOUTING UIC: UIC is 2-9 overall and 1-1 to start Horizon League play, which includes a 2-0 home win over Detroit Mercy. The Flames only other win was a 1-0 road win at Central Michigan. Emily Kavanaugh leads the UIC offense with three goals and 23 shot attempts while Tamae Douglas has two goals. The Flames' defense has allowed a 3.17 goals against average as Tara Khayam has played the majority of the team's minutes in goal, registering a 4.52 GAA and 32 saves.

INSIDE THE SERIES: IUPUI is 2-1 all-time against UIC and won the last two meetings in the series.

NEXT UP: IUPUI will host Youngstown State at 1:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 29. That match will be broadcast on ESPN3 as Scott Agness is on the call.
