INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI finished its first weekend of conference play on the wrong side of a 3-0 decision, falling to Green Bay on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 22).
The Jags (3-13, 0-2 Horizon) struggled to get things going offensively against the Phoenix, hitting just .092 to Green Bay's .252.
Abby Boatman led the way on offense for IUPUI with 11 kills and hit .667. Boatman was also tied for the team high with three blocks.
Rebecca Schlechte finished the night with 26 assists.
Elizabeth Scott led the Jags with 12 digs and
Rhiannon Schuenemann finished with nine. At the net,
Haley Hoffman had three blocks and Schlechte and
Maddie Dean each posted two.
After IUPUI began the game with a service ace, Green Bay responded scoring 10 of the next 11 points and eventually increased its lead to 15-4. The Jags and Phoenix would trade points until, with IUPUI trailing 20-12, Green Bay used a 3-0 run to increase the lead to 23-12.
With Green Bay serving for match point, Dean scored a kill for the Jags that started a rally. IUPUI scored six-straight points to cut the lead to 24-19 but an attack error ended the set in favor of Green Bay.
Set two was a back and forth affair with an
Abby Boatman kill pulling the Jags within one at 10-9. Green Bay opened up the lead with five-straight points and scored eight of the next ten to go ahead 18-11. Again the Jags would not go down without a fight, scoring four-straight before the Phoenix earned set point. Two kills by Boatman and a service ace fought off three set points but the Jags fell in set two 25-23 after a Green Bay block.
With only a one-point lead early in the third set, Green Bay again used a run, this time a 6-0 run to take a commanding 14-7 lead. Another 3-0 run put the Phoenix up 19-10 and after a block by the duo of
McKayla Wright and
Haley Hoffman, Green Bay scored the next six points to end the match.
IUPUI is on the road for its next two matches, traveling to Oakland (Sept. 28) and Youngstown State (Sept. 29).
