INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team will host Detroit Mercy on Saturday (Sept. 22) at 2:00 p.m. at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium. Saturday's game will be aired on ESPN+ as Andrew Kappes (pxp) describes the action.
Head coach
Chris Johnson's team is seeking a first league win after opening Horizon League play with a 3-1 road loss at Cleveland State. The Jags capped their two-game weekend by suffering their first home loss of the season to Valpo, 2-1 on Sunday. IUPUI (2-6-2, 0-1 Horizon) yielded the game-winner off a corner kick in the 87th minute after senior
Jessica Flores had pulled the Jags even in the 71st minute.
IUPUI hasn't been particularly sharp at either end of the field as the season moves past the midpoint. The Jags have been outscored 19-10 overall and outshot by 4.4 attempts per game. Sophomore
Miranda Ricks continues to lead the attack with two goals and four assists and both
Emma Chambers and
Natalie McNally have a goal and two assists apiece. IUPUI has had nine different goals scorers so far this season. Defensively, junior goalkeeper
Sophia Lipka has a 1.61 goals against average and 50 saves in her 10 starts.
Five Jaguars - Chambers, Lipka, McNally,
Valentine Pursey and
Jenna Sterr - have started all 10 matches so far this season. McNally has played a team-high 912 minutes with no other IUPUI field player having played more than 750.
QUOTABLE: "It just hasn't been good enough to get results. I thought our effort was good but our execution wasn't where it needed to be. There's a handful of plays in each game that decide the outcome and we haven't necessarily made enough of those plays in order to get wins," Johnson said after the Jaguars' 2-1 loss to Valpo.
SCOUTING DETROIT MERCY: Detroit Mercy is 3-4-2 overall and 0-1 to start Horizon League play after a 2-0 loss at UIC. The Titans are just 1-4-1 away from home with a double overtime win coming at Toledo earlier this month. Julie Ann Piechocki leads the Titans with eight points (three goals, two assists) and Carly Fiorido also has three scores. Molly Kane has two goals from her midfield spot. In goal, Marina Manzo has a 1.54 goals against average and 67 saves in the Titans' nine games. She's recorded a pair of shutouts, coming against Central Michigan and Stetson.
INSIDE THE SERIES: IUPUI is 4-6-2 all-time against Detroit Mercy and won on the road last season, 1-0 on
Hayley Shelton's goal in the 13th minute. Lipka recorded three stops in the shutout victory.
NEXT UP: IUPUI will continue Horizon League action on Wednesday night (Sept. 26) when the Jaguars trek to Chicago to face UIC at 7:00 p.m. Central (8 Eastern) in a match that will air on ESPN3.
