MACOMB, Ill. - The IUPUI men's soccer team's offensive doldrums continued on Tuesday night (Sept. 18) as the Jaguars were blanked on the road in non-conference play by Western Illinois, 1-0. Two separate stoppages in the first half resulted in more than an hour delay and the match was ultimately stopped after 83 minutes due to darkness. WIU's Orsy Gonzalez accounted for the day's only offense as he deposited the game-winner in the 30th minute.
IUPUI (1-4-2) was shutout for the fifth time in seven games to start the season.
Gonzalez tallied his first goal of the season on a long shot from the right side, eluding freshman goalkeeper
Quinn McCallion on the play.
Sophomore
Cameron Petersen put a tester on target in the game's sixth minute, forcing WIU (2-4-2) keeper Tim Trilk to make a stop.
Offensively, IUPUI mustered just four total shots, putting three on frame. However, the Jaguars had some key scoring chances go by the boards in the second half.
Junior
Alan Aguilar had a shot fly high of target in the 68th minute and moments later freshman
Riley Shives put a shot on frame against Trilk. Later, IUPUI had a free kick just outside the 18-yard box as
Sam Gavin hammered an attempt into the defensive wall.
Later, redshirt freshman
Fernando Borges just missed getting his first career tally in the 77th minute when he put a back post header on frame off service from the right side.
Western Illinois outshot the Jags 15-4 overall and had a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks. Trilk made three saves in the win.
IUPUI will return to Horizon League action on Saturday night (Sept. 22) when it heads north to take on Green Bay at 7:00 p.m. Central (8 Eastern).
