INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI volleyball hosts the 2018 Hampton Inn Invitational over the weekend which will feature matches against Western Michigan, SIUE and Northern Arizona.
The tournament begins for the Jags with a match against Western Michigan on Friday (Aug. 31) at 6:30 p.m. When the calendar turns to September, IUPUI will have two matches on Saturday (Sept. 1), when they face SIUE at Noon and Northern Arizona to close out the tournament at 7 p.m.
Head coach Steve Payne's squad picked up its first win of the season with a
victory over Purdue Fort Wayne on Tuesday (Aug. 28). Senior
Maggie Gibson led the Jags with 13 kills, while sophomore
Rebecca Schlechte had 24 assists and freshman
Rachel Hickey finished with 22 digs.
Gibson has been stuffing the stat sheet for IUPUI, leading the team in kills per set (2.93), while sitting in second on the team in assists per set (4.07) and digs per set (3.07).
Offensively, the Jags have three other players averaging at least 2.00 kills per set –
Elizabeth Scott (2.31),
Hannah Oehlberg (2.20) and
McKayla Wright (2.00).
Schlechte has earned the primary setter position, leading the squad with 5.07 assists per set and is also averaging 2.14 digs per set.
On the defensive end, sophomore
Rhiannon Schuenemann leads the Jags with 3.43 digs per set. Hickey, who has worn the libero jersey for the last two matches for the Jags is third on the team with 3.00 digs per set.
Haley Hoffman leads the Jags net defense with 1.14 blocks per set.
SCOUTING WESTERN MICHIGAN
Western Michigan comes in to the match with the Jags riding a two-match winning streak. The Broncos beat South Dakota State 3-1 and swept Chicago State the last time taking the court. Rachel Bontrager leads the Broncos with 4.21 kills per set while teammates Willow Martin and Sammi Labolle are both over the 2.00 kills per set mark.
Defensively, Kathleen Reilly leads Western Michigan with 4.86 digs per set and the Broncos are averaging 15.43 digs per set. Jordan White's 1.33 blocks per set leads the Broncos net defense.
SCOUTING SIUE
SIUE has lost three-straight matches to begin its season, including a 3-1 loss to Green Bay. The Cougars will face off against Northern Arizona in its first match of the tournament before playing IUPUI. Offense has been an issue early in the year for SIUE, only hitting .072 and no one on the Cougars roster has more than 1.91 kills per set.
On the defensive end, SIUE is allowing opponents to hit .241 and Rachel McDonald leads the team with 3.10 digs per set.
SCOUTING NORTHERN ARIZONA
IUPUI will meet Northern Arizona for the first time in program history to close out the Hampton Inn Invitational. The Lumberjacks lost their first match of the season to Nevada but then won its next three matches.
Northern Arizona is hitting .240 on the season and has two players, Kaylie Jorgenson (3.29) and Heaven Harris (3.18) with over 3.00 kills per set on the season. Northern Arizona is only allowing opposing teams to hit .151 as the Lumberjacks are averaging 20.35 digs per set and 2.76 blocks per set. Jordan Anderson leads the team with 6.00 digs per set and three Lumberjacks are averaging over 1.00 blocks per set with Abby Akin leading the way at 1.35.
