JAGS SWEPT AWAY BY LOUISVILLE

Senior Maggie Gibson named to the All-Tournament Team at the Cardinal Classic.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The IUPUI volleyball team closed out its weekend at the Louisville Cardinal Classic with a 0-3 loss to the host Louisville Cardinals.

Junior McKayla Wright let IUPUI (0-3) on the offensive end, tallying eight kills. Senior Maggie Gibson finished with seven kills and junior Haley Hoffman added five. Gibson also finished second on the team with 10 assists and eight digs. Gibson was named to the All-Tournament team after her performance over the weekend.

Freshman Rachel Hickey, getting her first career start at the libero position, posted a team-high nine digs and also finished with two aces. Sophomore Rhiannon Schuenemann was tied with Gibson with eight digs. Fellow sophomore Rebecca Schlechte led the team in assists with 13.

For the third-straight match, the Jags struggled to find rhythm on the offensive end of the court, hitting just .104 as a team and only had 26 kills to Louisville's (3-0) 48.

The Jags hung around Louisville early in the first set, trailing only 8-6 after an error by the Cardinals. Louisville responded with 3-0 run that was stopped by a kill from Gibson. A kill by Wright and another error got the Jags within three at 13-10 but Louisville took control of the set with a 5-1 run and closed the set with a 6-1 run to take the first frame 25-14.

IUPUI jumped out to an early lead in the second frame after a kill by Wright, ace by Hickey and kill by Gibson made the score 4-1 Jags. A 7-0 run by Louisville quickly changed the Jaguar lead to a four point deficit for IUPUI. Later in the set, a 9-0 run by the Cardinals put the set out of reach and the Cardinals cruised to a 2-0 match lead with a 25-12 set win.

The third set began similarly to the second with two kills from Gibson and a kill by Hoffman contributing to a 4-1 Jaguar lead. IUPUI was able to maintain the lead and pushed the lead to 10-6 after a kill by Wright and two errors by Louisville. When Louisville pulled within one after an error by Gibson, the Jags responded with five-straight points that featured an ace by Hickey, kill by Gibson and block by Hoffman and Wright. Back-to-back kills by Wright put the Jags up 18-11 and in position to push the match to a fourth set.

Louisville buckled down in front of its home crowd and used a 10-3 run to tie the set at 21. A kill by Elizabeth Scott gave the Jags the lead back but Louisville scored two points to take their first set lead. After Gibson tied up the set with a kill, Louisville closed out the match with two-straight points.

IUPUI heads home for its first home match of the season, taking on Purdue Fort Wayne on Tuesday (Aug. 28) at 7 p.m. in the Jungle.
