VALPARAISO, Ind. - The IUPUI men's soccer team tasted heartbreak in the 2018 season opener on Friday night (Aug. 24), falling in double overtime at Valparaiso, 1-0. The Jaguars weathered Valpo's offensive storm from the get-go, before finally breaking in the 104th minute.

Valpo (1-0) outshot the Jaguars 29-2, but needed more than 100 minutes to ultimately solve freshman goalkeeper Quinn McCallion. The Jaguars' bend but don't break approach just missed getting a result until VU's Michael Marchionna spoiled those plans. Marchionna took a nifty pass from Valpo's Akeem Bradford and angled a left-footed shot just inside the right post for the game's lone goal. The Valpo attacker was able to navigate between Sam Gavin and Tommy Patacca before unloading his fifth and final shot in just 29 minutes of work off the bench.

Marchionna had tried McCallion from a similar angle just moments prior as the IUPUI keeper made his eighth and final stop of the night.

IUPUI's offense was limited to a Sean Siasia attempt in traffic early in the first half and an Alan Aguilar drive from distance in the closing seconds of regulation, which was plucked by VU keeper Nacho Miras for his only save of the night.

Despite the outcome, it was a promising start to the regular season for a team that was also blanked in two preseason contests. Missing some key pieces, the Jaguars' defense still held strong, largely allowing Valpo to fire from distance. Patacca and Nick Anderson played every minute of Friday's contest while Trevor Semakula also had a strong showing in the season opener.

McCallion's IUPUI debut was also strong as he faced the 29-shot onslaught.

IUPUI will return home to host Bradley University at 5:00 p.m. on Friday night (Aug. 31) at Michael A. Carroll Stadium.
