Lipka Postgame
INDIANAPOLIS - IUPUI junior goalkeeper
Sophia Lipka proved that she's in midseason form, but the Butler defense rendered the Jaguars' attack punchless as the Bulldogs held serve in a 2-0 home win on Monday night (Aug. 20). Lipka, the reigning Horizon League Goalkeeper of the Year, virtually stonewalled Butler for 90 minutes as the Bulldogs outshot IUPUI (1-1) 26-3.
Lipka recorded eight saves in the loss while two Butler keepers combined on a pair of saves in the win.
Butler (2-0) peppered the Jaguars from the outset, outshooting the guests 14-2 in the opening half. However the only time Butler solved the otherwise brilliant Lipka in the first half came in the 14th minute. Butler striker Anja Savich redirected a cross from Paige Monaghan point blank range into an open net, capping a well constructed build through the IUPUI defense.
"It felt good. Actually, I like being tested from the get-go. It was high pressure all game," Lipka said. "I think a lot of our kids put in a lot of work and a lot of heart the whole time.
"I think going into the game, you always want to win. We knew they were fast, we knew they were more athletic and we knew they were taller - that's just how it is. We just have to do the things we know."
After IUPUI threw numbers into the attack looking to get equal late, Butler countered in transition as Monaghan, a Hermann Trophy candidate, setup Morgan Kloosterman's insurance goal in the 83rd minute.
Despite the different combinations that head coach
Chris Johnson rolled out, the Jaguars were unable to muster much in the attacking third against the faster, more athletic Bulldogs.
IUPUI's only two first half attempts came via a
Valentine Pursey restart early in the match and a late
Denise Veldman header that saw easily saved by BU starting goalkeeper Hannah Luedtke. The Jags' lone attempt of the second half came on an
Elizabeth Bueckers drive, that ultimately resulted in the Jags' lone corner kick of the contest. IUPUI's best scoring chance of the match came in the 80th minute as Butler backs struggled to clear the ball outside of their own 18. On the flip side, none of the IUPUI attackers could get a clean touch before it was finally cleared, leading to the Bulldogs' final goal of the match.
Elena Gutlove had a team-high five attempts for the hosts and defender Annika Schmidt had four shots from the back line.
IUPUI will continue the non-conference portion of the schedule with a two-game trip ot Kentucky. The Jaguars will face Murray State on Friday afternoon (Aug. 24) before trekking to Eastern Kentucky for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff on Sunday (Aug. 26).
