MURRAY, Ky. - If the women's soccer team was feeling a little swagger after extending a strong Butler team earlier in the week, the swagger turned into a saunter as the Jaguars were clubbed by Murray State, 3-0 on Friday (Aug. 24). The host Racers scored a pair of goals in just more than 13 minutes in the first half and added some second half insurance to remain undefeated on the season.
IUPUI (1-2) was outshot 29-8 on the day and 14-4 on goal.
"We just don't have 11 girls right now that are willing to put up a consistent effort that it takes to win games. We might have four or five, but we don't have many more than that," head coach
Chris Johnson said. "We're lacking accountability on the field and that's a problem.
"Their three forwards gave us a lot of problems with their ability to get behind us with their speed. We just weren't able to match their speed up top."
Murray State forward Miyah Watford scored a pair of goals in the win and reigning OVC Co-Offensive Player of the Week Abby Jones had a goal and an assist in the win.
IUPUI received a jolt in the 16th minute when
Sophia Lipka snuffed out a penalty kick for the second time already this season, stopping Cori Cain's attempt. However, less than two minutes later, Watford put the Racers in front with her third goal of the young season. In the 31st minute, Watford benefited from a Jones assist to make it 2-0 before halftime.
The Jaguars' best scoring chance of the first half was an
Elizabeth Bueckers attempt late in the half, which was stopped by Alex Steigerwald. Bueckers opened the second half with an early shot on goal against Steigerwald. However, momentum swung in the direction of Murray State as the Racers peppered shots against Lipka until Jones finally broke through in the 56th minute.
The defense was stingier in the second half, albeit at the mercy of the midfield as sophomore stalwart
Natalie McNally dropped back after intermission to solidify the back third.
Bueckers,
Jessica Flores and
Valentine Pursey had three shots apiece for the Jags while Lipka made 11 saves in the loss.
IUPUI will cap the two-game trip at Eastern Kentucky at 1:00 p.m..
