INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team capped exhibition play on Friday night (Aug. 17), hosting reigning NCAA Division II national champion University of Charleston at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium. The Golden Eagles scored a pair of goals on restart situations before adding a late capper in a 3-0 victory over the Jaguars.
"We talked about some things very specifically coming out of the NIU game that didn't go well for us and I think in particular that came on just the flat out effort side to fulfill the role that you're being asked to fulfill by the coaching staff," head coach Brian Barnett said. "Tonight we 100 percent saw a better effort from our guys.
"Credit to our guys for putting in the effort tonight."
Charleston showed their offensive chops, ultimately earning a penalty kick in the 30th minute. Gabriel Cabral took a long, deliberate approach before drilling a shot past rookie netminder
Quinn McCallion for the game-winner. Having traveled with nearly 60 student-athletes, Charleston sent out an entire new 11 to start the second half and again used a restart to foil the Jaguars' defense. This time, Armando Tikvic rifled a shot just inside the post from 20 yards out in the 60th minute for the second score of the night. Alexandre Guichard added some late insurance by angling a shot past sophomore goalkeeper
Michael Buck in the 88th minute.
Charleston closed with an 18-3 shot advantage while IUPUI enjoyed a 3-2 advantage on corner kicks.
Two games into the preseason, Barnett hasn't had much of a look at his new troops as injuries have limited his numbers and forced him to play some unique combinations. The attack showed signs of life with
Riley Shives as the primary target. Only four newcomers saw time on Friday night with all four getting a starting nod.
"We're to a point where we can string together passes, but we still need to be better in the final third. We can't be content with stringing together 10 passes in the midfield but we need to be better about getting a shot off when we're in position," Barnett said.
McCallion made one stop in goal while Buck went without a save in 25 minutes of relief work.
IUPUI will open the regular season next Friday night (Aug. 24) when the Jaguars open up at Valparaiso at 6:00 p.m. Eastern.
