DeKALB, Ill. - The IUPUI men's soccer team took the field for the first time on Tuesday night (Aug. 14), falling to Northern Illinois in exhibition play, 4-0 at the NIU Soccer Complex. The Jags yielded an own goal in the 32nd minute and the Huskies tallied twice more before halftime en route to the shutout win.
NIU, which advanced to 2-0 in preseason play, outshot the Jaguars 23-1 overall and 13-0 on target.
"In the second half there was an effort to get some of the tactical pieces right, which helped us be better defensively and win the ball higher up the field," head coach
Brian Barnett said. "Both goalkeepers did what they could to make the saves they should."
Rookie
Quinn McCallion earned the start in goal and was victimized by an own goal as an NIU cross to the back post was inadvertently headed into the Jaguars' late in the first half. NIU piled on as Ethan Pitre tallied in the 42nd minute and Nick Markanich scored in the 44th minute. Jan Maertins assisted on both goals as the Huskies built a 3-0 lead at the break.
Noah Brodie capped the scoring in the 71st minute, sneaking a shot past sophomore goalkeeper
Michael Buck.
Buck finished with five saves as McCallion had made four first half stops. The duo is locked in a true competition for the starting job after Buck registered a 1.68 goals against average and 37 saves in 12 appearances a season ago. The Jaguars' other keeper on the roster,
Noah Osearo, is currently sidelined due to injury.
Sophomore
Cameron Petersen was credited with IUPUI's lone attempt of the contest from his midfield position, as he had a drive ricochet off an NIU defender, resulting in a
Tommy Driscoll corner kick. With a number of players sidelined to start the year, Barnett played 18 different players, all of whom played at least 35 minutes.
Pedro Valladao,
Alan Aguilar and freshman
Eli Quivey played a team-high 71 minutes while six others played at least 60 minutes.
Most importantly, Barnett's squad avoided further injuries heading into Friday's second preseason competition. The Jaguars will host University of Charleston at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Friday night (Aug. 17) at 8:00 p.m.. Admission is FREE for IUPUI students with a valid Crimson Card while general admission is just $5. The contest will immediately follow the women's team's regular season opener against Marian University, which will kickoff at 5:30 p.m..
