INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI volleyball won its third-straight match after a sweep of the Youngstown State Penguins on Friday (Nov. 9) night. The Jags won the match 25-20, 25-23 and 25-13 to improve to 8-21 on the season and 5-10 in Horizon League play.
"We are playing every point one at a time and I think we are really flowing together as a team and happy to be out there," said senior
Maggie Gibson.
As has been the trend in recent matches, IUPUI was led by freshman
Hannah Oehlberg, who finished with 10 kills and added 11 digs for her second-career double-double. It marks the fourth game in the last five that Oehlberg has led the Jags in kills and her fourth-straight match with at least ten kills.
"It certainly builds my confidence being set the ball so much," said Oehlberg. "Maggie [Gibson] has been setting us up really well. We have been working on it a lot in practice and the connection has been really strong."
The offense was paced by Gibson, who finished with 33 assists and team-high 16 digs for a double-double of her own. The senior has taken over setting duties in the last five matches and has averaged 35.6 assists in those matches.
IUPUI outhit Youngstown State .177 to .084 and forced the Penguins to hit under .050 in both the first and third sets. Overall the Penguins finished with 22 errors to the Jags 15.
Sophomore
Maddie Dean finished second on the team with eight kills and
Kaitlyn Johnson and
Haley Hoffman each finished with seven kills.
On defense, the Jags finished with 69 digs on a team effort with five Jags finishing with double-digit digs. Along with Gibson and Oehlberg,
Rhiannon Schuenemann had 14 digs, followed by
Rebecca Schlechte (12) and
Rachel Hickey (10).
Abby Boatman and Hoffman each finished with three blocks as the Jags had six as a team.
IUPUI took an advantage early in the first set using a 4-0 to take a 10-6 lead after a Hoffman kill. Kills by Boatman and Oehlberg, followed by an ace by Schlechte pushed the Jags lead to 18-12 but the Penguins fought back to make the score 22-20 in favor of IUPUI. The Jags shut down the Penguins comeback attempt with a kill by Oehlberg and two Youngstown State errors ended the set.
Set two was another back-and-forth battle with teams trading runs early. IUPUI managed to take a 15-14 lead, taking advantage of multiple Penguins errors but the teams continued to trade points until the score was knotted at 18. From that point, a kill by Oehlberg sparked a 5-0 run that featured a block from Boatman and Gibson and kills by Gibson and Dean to push ahead to take set two 25-23.
IUPUI dominated the final set, jumping out to another early lead. Back-to-back kills by Oehlberg put the Jags up 6-2 and later in the frame, two kills by Johnson made the score 14-8. A kill by Boatman pushed the IUPUI lead to eight and another 4-0 run late in the set made the score 24-12. An error by Youngstown State ended the set and the match.
The Jags will honor seniors Boatman, Gibson and
Elizabeth Scott before the match on Saturday (Nov. 10) against Oakland. IUPUI will look to end its season on a high note with four-straight wins with the match against the Golden Grizzlies starting at 4 p.m.
