SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Junior
Holly Hoopingarner matched her career-high with 23 points and the Jaguars shut down VCU's offense in the fourth quarter as IUPUI earned a 63-61 win on Sunday (Nov. 25) to close out the UTSA Thanksgiving Classic.
"Today was a really big win for us considering VCU is the biggest and most athletic team we've faced this year," said head coach
Austin Parkinson. "It's exciting for our kids to come down here and come away with two wins."
IUPUI (5-1) was led by Hoopingarner's 23 as the Greenwood, Ind., native went a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line, matching a career-high, and 3-for-5 from three point range.
Macee Williams battled foul trouble all game but managed to score 13 points and
Sydney Roule also finished in double-figures, scoring 10.
The Jags found themselves down four at 48-44 with 38 seconds left in the third quarter but ended the quarter with Roule scoring the last five points, hitting two free throws and a three just before the buzzer to give IUPUI a 49-48 lead.
VCU (4-2) responded with four points to start the fourth quarter and take a 52-49 lead but IUPUI's defense shut down the Rams as the Jags mounted their comeback. IUPUI held VCU scoreless for over seven minutes as both offenses stalled. Williams hit a layup to pull the Jags within one with 6:29 left on the clock and neither team would score until another Williams layup with 1:57 remaining put the Jags up 53-52.
After a missed layup by VCU,
Sydney Hall hit her second three of the game to put IUPUI up 56-52. From there, Hoopingarner would help the Jags keep the Rams at bay, hitting six-straight free throws to preserve the Jags second-straight win.
"Holly may have played the best game of her career and Syd Hall came up with a huge late three," said Parkinson.
IUPUI made its living behind the three-point line, hitting 10-of-21 shots behind the arc and went 17-of-23 from the free throw line. For the game, IUPUI shot just 36% from the field as the Jags shot 8-for-29 from two-point range, leading VCU to a 38-8 advantage in the paint. VCU shot 49% for the game but only went 1-for-7 from three and 10-for-16 from the free throw line.
The Jags held a 33-27 margin on the glass and outrebounded VCU 13-5 on the offensive glass. The advantage gave IUPUI a 13-6 lead in second chance points. Williams and
Allex Brown each pulled down six rebounds to lead IUPUI.
IUPUI will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 30 at the Jungle when the Jags play host to Northern Iowa at 7 p.m.
