INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI suffered its third-straight home conference play defeat getting swept by Milwaukee on Wednesday night (Oct. 3).
The Jags (5-14, 2-3 Horizon) were led by senior
Maggie Gibson who posted a double-double with team-highs in kills (13) and digs (15).
Maddie Dean was the other Jag to finish with double-digit kills, collecting 10.
Rebecca Schlechte reached 30 assists for the third-straight match with 34.
IUPUI started strong, hitting .261 in first frame but the offense fell off as the game wore on with the Jags hitting .133 in the second set and just .081 in set three. The defense finished with just 54 digs, the second lowest total in the last nine matches. Milwaukee (3-15, 2-3 Horizon) was able to hit .246 in the match, the Panthers highest hitting percentage of the season, and hit over .300 in both the first and third sets.
IUPUI did have a good night at the net, totaling eight blocks as a team.
Haley Hoffman led IUPUI with four, followed by three from Schlechte and
Abby Boatman.
In the first set, IUPUI looked like it was starting to take control scoring three of four points to take a 15-12 lead. After a Gibson kill put the Jags up 18-15, Milwaukee responded with three-straight points to tie the set. The teams would trade points until three-straight gave the Panthers set point. IUPUI managed to fight off six-straight set points but could never earn a set point of its own before Milwaukee closed out the first set 30-28.
After IUPUI went up 2-1 early in the second set, Milwaukee quickly grabbed a lead and would not let the lead go. IUPUI tried to get back in the set but every time the Jaguars would tie the set they could never get over the hump to grab the lead. When a kill by Dean pulled the Jags within one at 18-17, Milwaukee won four of the next five points to push the lead to four. IUPUI pulled within two after a block by Boatman and
Elizabeth Scott and an ace by Gibson but a kill by the Panthers gave them a 25-22 set win.
Just like the first two sets, set three began with the teams trading mini runs and IUPUI tied the set at 11 after a Milwaukee error. Unfortunately for the Jags, Milwaukee responded with another run, outscoring the Jags 7-2 to open up the score. A kill by Dean made the score 20-15 but the Panthers would score the last five points of the match to earn the sweep.
IUPUI will hit the road for its next match to take on Cleveland State on Friday (Oct. 5) at 6 p.m.
