INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team punched its ticket into the six-team Horizon League Tournament on Sunday (Oct. 28) with a 2-1 overtime win over Northern Kentucky, keeping the Jags undefeated in home league games in 2018. Freshman
Corey Goede flew threw traffic and headed home his first career goal in the final minute of the first overtime to give the hosts a thrilling home victory. Junior
Alan Aguilar also scored in the win and sophomore
Cameron Petersen contributed an assist.
The win sparked a wild celebration for head coach Brian Barnett's team, which will play in a league tournament for the first time since 2013. The day began with a celebration of the program's six seniors -
Nick Anderson,
Sam Gavin,
Jared O'Dell,
Trevor Semakula,
Sean Siasia and
Rodrigo Zampieri - and the party continued after Goede's golden goal.
"I'm just so proud of the guys' resolve throughout the season. This was another example of our guys sticking with the game plan, executing and getting a result against a really good Northern Kentucky team. I couldn't be happier for them as a group. They wanted this one and they wanted to ensure we got three points," Barnett said. "I thought (Petersen) stepped up and made plays when we needed him to today and that was a big effort from Goede to get on the end of that header.
"I'm super proud of every single one of them right now."
The wind was the story throughout the day with strong gusts blowing into the east endzone from the opening whistle. IUPUI (4-10-3, 4-3-1 HL) was unable to score with the wind advantage in the first half as the Jaguars mustered just four shot attempts - all from sophomore
Tommy Patacca. NKU didn't fare any better going against the wind, often times opting to burn clock by passing the ball between the keeper and outside backs with no IUPUI attacking pressure making them deviate from that plan.
Ironically, IUPUI got the game's first tally going against the wind early in the second half, thanks to Petersen's fancy footwork. The crafty New Yorker worked around his defender from the right flank, getting well inside the 18-yard box before being driven to the ground by NKU Abdul Kooistra for an easy foul call. The enigmatic Petersen burst to his feet to celebrate the whistle, setting the table for Aguilar, the Jaguars' top scorer.
On the ensuing PK in the 59th minute, Aguilar, working against the driving wind, opted to place a shot squarely on frame to outfox NKU goalkeeper Jim Barkei for his fifth tally of the year.
The wind had everything to do with NKU's equalizer in the 71st minute as Connor Probert scored directly off a corner kick into the east goal. Freshman goalkeeper
Quinn McCallion had no chance as the wind blown corner tucked into the upper 90 to knot the score. Probert's score came on one of NKU's eight second half corners as they finished with an 11-3 margin on corners and held IUPUI without one until overtime.
Early in overtime, IUPUI thought it had the game-winner when
Yan Souza put a strike on frame through a scrum in close to the NKU goal. However, Barkei sprawled to his right to get a palm to the shot and keep the game alive. Souza then rolled the rebound chance across the endline, but nobody was able to get the finishing touch before it was cleared away.
However, it was IUPUI's third and final corner of the day that proved to be the winner. Petersen used the wind to bend a beautiful ball over the six-yard box into danger. That's where the 6-foot-2 Goede soared through a mass of bodies and hammered a header past Barkei for a no doubt, walk-off winner. In doing so, he became the fourth different IUPUI player with a game-winner this season. It was Petersen's first career point as IUPUI improved to 2-3-3 in overtime this season.
McCallion and Barkei finished with five stops each as NKU outshot the Jaguars 20-13. However, IUPUI had a 7-6 shot on goal advantage as the Norse struggled to keep attempts on frame in the conditions. Probert had a game-high six attempts.
IUPUI will watch scores next weekend to learn its postseason matchup. The Jags are currently locked in a three-way tie for second-place in the standings with 13 points.
