GREEN BAY, Wisc. - Junior
Yan Souza redirected a shot into the left-hand side of the net off a pass from sophomore
Gianni Catenacci to give the Jaguars a 3-2 overtime win at Green Bay in the Horizon League Tournament Quarterfinals on Monday night (Nov. 5). The win sets up a meeting with No. 2 seeded UIC in the Horizon League Semifinals in Dayton, Ohio, on Thursday night (Nov. 8) at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN+. It also snapped the Jaguars' streak of 43 straight games without a road win and it couldn't have come at a more opportune time.
After squandering the team's first two-goal lead of the season, the Jaguars (5-10-3) claimed their third overtime victory of the year, courtesy of Souza's second career score. Catenacci delivered the winning assist from the left flank to Souza, who got on the receiving end and ultimately extended IUPUI's season. Souza was playing just his fourth match of the season after missing the bulk of the season due to injury.
"It's an amazing feeling to be able to come back at the end of the season and help the team in such a crucial moment," Souza said. "All the credit goes to my teammates who fought until the final whistle."
"It was a great effort from the whole team," Catenacci said. "After giving up a 2-0 lead everyone responded well together by keeping our heads up and grinding towards a win. I'm so happy for all of us and the seniors especially. We're glad to keep this great season going."
Green Bay (8-6-2) dominated the run of play, resulting in a 19-7 shot margin and 13-2 advantage in corner kicks. However, IUPUI struck for the game's first two goals, forcing the Phoenix to chase the game for much of the night.
The same combination that secured the Jaguars' postseason berth in the regular season finale connected on the day's first goal as
Cameron Petersen's corner setup
Corey Goede's header to give the Jags a quick 1-0 lead. The lead doubled when Siasia had a brilliant turn deep in Green Bay territory as he spun on his defender and blazed a shot into the roof of the net in the 25th minute. The two goal advantage lasted all of 13 minutes as Green Bay's Michael Carreon snuck a shot past freshman goalkeeper
Quinn McCallion just inside the far post in the game's 38th minute to cut the lead in half.
After taking a 2-1 lead to the break, Green Bay continued to hunt the equalizer throughout the second half. An ill advised foul deep in IUPUI territory finally set the table in the 81st minute as Green Bay capitalized on a rare McCallion miscue in net. On the free kick, McCallion raced off his line to try to deter the threat, but was unable to make the play. Green Bay's Adam Mansa was able to get on the business end of the free kick and easily redirect a header into a wide open net.
A flurry late in regulation gave IUPUI a chance for a Goede long throw-in deep in Green Bay territory, but the wet, rainy conditions made a long throw a near impossibility. He did however earn a corner kick, but regulation time expired before IUPUI could get a quality opportunity.
Play was much more balanced in overtime as Souza's header was the only shot attempt by either side in the extra period. It also avenged an earlier season loss to the Phoenix as the Jaguars yielded a penalty kick in the 109th minute to lose a critical league match.
McCallion, who was voted to the league's All-Freshman Team earlier in the day, registered nine stops in earning his fifth career win. His opposite number, Nikola Kahvedzic, made just one save in the loss. Goede led the IUPUI attack with three shot attempts, putting two on frame.
The win was IUPUI's first conference tournament victory since 2007 when the Jaguars defeated Oral Roberts in the semifinals round of The Summit League Tournament to advance to the championship game.
