INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI volleyball's offense struggled to get going as the Jags lost in four sets to Wright State on Friday night (Oct. 12).
Senior
Maggie Gibson led IUPUI (5-16, 2-5 Horizon) with 12 kills and added 16 assists. Gibson was also one dig shy of her fifth triple-double of the season, finishing second on the team with nine digs. Fellow senior
Abby Boatman was second on the squad with 11 kills. Rebecca Schlechte finished the night with 25 assists and seven digs.
On the night, the Jags struggled on the offensive end, committing 35 errors to 48 kills and finishing with a .076 hitting percentage. IUPUI managed to hit .250 as a team in the second set, the only frame the Jags took from Wright State (10-9, 2-5 Horizon), but hit .116 in the first, -.125 in the third and .062 in the fourth. Wright State finished the night with 12 blocks to just four for IUPUI and had 13 more digs (81-68).
Wright State jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead over the Jags in the first set but IUPUI pulled back to within one at 10-9. The Raiders responded and used three different three-point runs to push the lead to 21-15. Back-to-back kills by Gibson pulled the Jags to within three before WSU closed out the set.
Set two was tight the entire way with no team leading by more than three for the whole set. With the score tied at 19, a kill by
McKayla Wright, who finished with eight on the night, was followed by two errors to give IUPUI a three-point lead. Wright State pulled within one three more times in the set but IUPUI always had an answer before winning the set 25-23.
IUPUI's offense disappeared in the third set with the Jags hitting 12 errors to just seven kills as Wright State used an 8-2 run to take control of the set on the way to a 25-14 set win.
The teams traded runs in the beginning of the fourth set with IUPUI taking a 14-12 lead after a service ace by
Rhiannon Schuenemann. A kill by Boatman broke a 16-16 tie but the Raiders scored seven of the next nine points and IUPUI was not able to pull back in to the set, losing the final frame 25-21.
The Jaguars will play host to Northern Kentucky to end the weekend on Saturday (Oct. 12) at 4 p.m. in the Jungle.
