INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI women's basketball team is off to the best start in program history after its 90-62 win over Detroit Mercy on Thursday (Jan. 11). The Jags used one of the best offensive performances of the season to remain undefeated in Horizon League play.
IUPUI (12-3, 4-0 Horizon) scored a season-high 90 points, the most the Jags have scored since a 95-62 win over Oakland City on Nov. 16, 2016. The Jags shot 49.3 percent from the field and hit 9-of-23 threes as four players scored in double figures. The 12-3 mark through 15 games is the best start for the Jags in school history and IUPUI moved to 4-0 for the first time ever in conference play.
Sydney Hall led the way for IUPUI with 19 points, hitting five of her ten threes.
Macee Williams, who only played four minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, scored 18 points, 14 coming in the second half, to reach double figures for the 10
th time this season.
Danielle Lawrence scored 13 on 5-for-9 shooting and
Jenna Gunn added 12 going 6-for-9 from the field.
"I would say my teammates are getting me the ball when I am open," said Hall. "We have been moving the ball a lot better and that has helped my shooting."
"We had 21 assists and shared the ball really well," said head coach
Austin Parkinson. "We have a lot of weapons. You can take certain things away and we are able to score in other areas."
The Jags returned home for the first time since Dec. 6 and were energized by playing in front of the home crowd again.
"We talked a lot before that game about we haven't played here in a month and we wanted to get back in to a rhythm and a flow because we have got three games here in a short amount of time," said Parkinson.
IUPUI pulled away from Detroit Mercy (0-16, 0-5 Horizon) in the fourth using a 13-0 run that began with a layup by Gunn. Williams added a three point play and Hall added two free throws before hitting back-to-back threes to end the run and give the Jags an 88-56 lead with 5:25 remaining the game.
The Jags dominated the Titans inside and on the glass as IUPUI outscored Detroit Mercy 42-20 in the paint and outrebounded the Titans 48-25. The Jags also finished with 20 second-chance points due to 18 offensive rebounds.
Morgan Allen led the way with a career-high 12 points, eight coming on the offensive end.
Tamya Sims finished with nine rebounds to go along with nine points.
IUPUI was up by 11 in the second after a jumper from Detroit Mercy's Brittney Jackson but responded with nine-straight as Gunn scored a jumper and Hall added another three and two free throws. A jumper from Sims gave IUPUI its first 20-point lead of the game. The Jags would finish the half on a on an 8-0 run after back-to-back threes from Lawrence and Hall to take a 51-26 lead in to the break.
After Detroit Mercy scored the opening bucket of the second half, Williams scored four-straight points to start a 7-0 run for the Jags. Detroit Mercy attempted a comeback with Brianne Cohen scoring seven-straight points to ignite a 12-0 Titans run but Hall squashed that with a three and Williams had a three-point play to end any chance of a Detroit Mercy comeback.
The Jags continue their three game home stand when they host Oakland on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 3 p.m. in the Jungle.
