INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team came up two goals short on a wild night with UIC at Carroll Stadium on Saturday (Sept. 30), 4-2. The match was tied at 1-1 at the break before the Jaguars yielded three second half scores in a Horizon League loss to the Flames. Senior Uriel Macias scored on a first half penalty kick and junior Jared O'Dell tallied a second half goal off an Alan Aguilar assist in the loss.

UIC (3-5-1, 2-2 Horizon) got a pair of goals from Oscar Gonzalez and both Jesus Perez and Lyes Ghezali had a pair of assists for the victors. Peter Becht tallied the game-winner in the 54th minute off a Ghezali assist.

It looked like the Jaguars would be in for a long night from the outset as Gonzalez buried a bomb past Tyler Shanahan in the 17th minute to give the Flames an early 1-0 lead. After having been blanked the past four games, any deficit would seem insurmountable, but the Jaguars bucked that trend in the 31st minute, earning a penalty kick opportunity. Macias outsmarted UIC goalkeeper Sawyer Jackman, sliding a shot to his right for his first goal of the season.

Tied 1-1 at the break, UIC went back in front in the 49th minute when Albert Arabik pinged a shot off the far post and into the net from 14 yards out. Just more than five minutes later, Becht ripped a shot from distance to give the guests a 3-1 lead. Things got dire in the 55th minute when freshman Cameron Petersen was sent off with a straight red card for a hard challenge, deep in UIC territory.

However, IUPUI (0-9, 0-4 Horizon) refused to fold and had an immediate answer, getting a goal from O'Dell, despite playing down a man. Aguilar attempted a drive from the right side that Jackman was unable to secure, allowing O'Dell the opportunity to push the rebound into an empty net for his second career goal.

"I was proud of how we had some guys come off the bench come in and step up to the challenge tonight," head coach Brian Barnett said. "That was promising. Some guys showed up and really made an effort to put their stamp on the game."

UIC finished the scoring in the 61st minute on a Gonzalez drive to beat Shanahan.

Shanahan made nine saves in the loss as IUPUI continued to struggle to find a result. However, the program's second year leader wasn't displeased with his team's effort or energy.

"The most important thing is to have a response - to show up the next day and work and perform and bring a collective energy to the group that says 'we're here to continue to fight and we're here to work through this,'" Barnett said.

IUPUI was outshot 29-9 overall and 14-5 on goal as the Flames' direct style led to a lot of back-and-forth pace both ways. Macias and Yan Souza had a team-high two shots each while UIC's Jose Fuentes led all players with six attempts.

The Jaguars will be at Detroit Mercy on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 1:00 p.m. for their next contest.
