INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team will be back in Horizon League play on Saturday night (Sept. 30) when the Jaguars host UIC at 7:00 p.m. at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium. IUPUI (0-8, 0-3 Horizon) is seeking the program's first win of the season while UIC is riding back-to-back wins over Milwaukee and Northern Illinois.
Saturday's match will be the backend of a doubleheader as the women's squad will host Green Bay at 4:00 p.m. at the stadium.
IUPUI had one of it's best efforts of the season in a 1-0 loss to Valparaiso on Tuesday night, missing a first half penalty kick opportunity and yielding a second half score to the in-state opponent. The Jaguars earned an easy penalty kick call when a Jaguars' cross was knocked down by the arm of a defender, well inside the penalty area. However, junior
Sam Gavin was unable to capitalize, keeping the game tied heading into halftime. VU took a 1-0 lead early in the second half and kept the Jaguars' offense at bay the rest of the way.
Redshirt freshman
Tyler Shanahan made a career-high 10 saves in goal and now has a 2.50 goals against average in his four starts. Fellow redshirt freshman
Michael Buck has a 2.00 GAA in his four starts in net.
Offensively, sophomore
Pedro Valladao has a goal and an assist while
Yan Souza and
Tommy Patacca have the team's other two scores.
QUOTABLE: "The guys battled. I thought the fight and the effort was there. I can't fault the effort and that's what is important to me. We made one too many mistakes to win the game and that's what college soccer is about. We didn't do enough to get the win," head coach
Brian Barnett said after Tuesday's loss to Valparaiso.
CATCHING FIRE: An
otherwise innocuous Tweet highlighting the men's soccer program went viral earlier this week as true freshman
Cameron Haegele earned celebrity status with an animated GIF. The Tweet, previewing the Jaguars' home match with Valpo, has since earned more than 100 retweets and 900 likes. The GIF and Tweet has been seen more than 20,000 times in the past five days alone.
FORMER JAG EARNS MLS SPOT: After a long uphill climb, former IUPUI goalkeeper Eduardo Cortes recently inked a deal with the MLS FC Dallas as the team's third goalkeeper.
SCOUTING UIC: UIC (3-5-1, 1-2 Horizon) has won back-to-back games with a 2-1 win at Milwaukee and a 3-1 at home over Northern Illinois. Oscar Gonzalez and Jesus Perez lead the Flames' attack with two goals and four assists each while Max Todd also has two scores. Defensively, Sawyer Jackman has a 1.48 goals against average and 27 saves while compiling a 3-3-1 mark in goal. For the season, UIC has been outscored 13-10, despite outshooting opponents by nearly three shots per game.
INSIDE THE SERIES: IUPUI is 0-0-1 all-time against UIC as the two sides played to a 2-2 draw in Chicago on Sept. 14, 2012 as part of the Chicago South Loop Hotel UIC Soccer Classic. The Jags got goals from Kyle Hyland and Gregory Efiom in that contest, but squandered a two-goal lead in the final 11 minutes of regulation.
UP NEXT: IUPUI will face Detroit Mercy on Oct. 7 at 1:00 p.m. on the road.
