INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team ran its winning streak to eight on Wednesday night (Sept. 27) with a 2-1 Horizon League victory over UIC at Carroll Stadium. Junior Jessica Flores tallied her first career goal and senior Krissy Kirkhoff had a goal and an assist in the victory. Fellow senior Hayley Shelton assisted on both goals for the Jaguars as well. The win moved the Jaguars to 3-0 to start Horizon League play while UIC dipped to 2-10 overall and 0-3 in the league.

IUPUI (9-3, 3-0 Horizon) pushed the pace from the opening kickoff and broke the ice in the 11th minute off a fabulous Flores finish. Shelton played Kirkhoff forward into space up the left sideline and the Jaguars' attacker delivered a ball towards the near post where Flores angled a shot just inside the post. In doing so, both Shelton and Kirkhoff matched Kalli Shepler-Tucker for the program's all-time lead in assists with 16.

IUPUI continued to live in UIC's end for much of the first half, but couldn't muster another score before the break.

UIC (2-10, 0-3 Horizon) was unlucky in the 27th minute as they had the Jaguars' defense beaten but Jessica Christmas rang a shot off the underside of the bar and back on the field of play.

After continuing to build dangerous opportunities, the Jags hit paydirt in the 60th minute when Shelton played a long lead pass to Kirkhoff, sprinting up the middle of the field. Kirkhoff got on the end and finished, sliding a shot past the challenging Annie Dicanio for her third score of the season.

The Jags maintained a 2-0 lead until the 83rd minute when the Flames cut the lead in half on an Emily Valentine penalty kick. UIC drew an easy call deep in the Jaguars' box and Valentine scored the freebie as sophomore keeper Sophia Lipka committed a split second too soon, double hopped and allowed the shot to her right.

However, IUPUI was able to kill the final seven-plus minutes, controlling possession when the starters returned to the field.

IUPUI closed with a 19-9 shot advantage and 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Kirkhoff fired all of her team-high four shots in the second half while Flores, Valentine Pursey and Sarah Jacobs had three each. IUPUI also earned eight corner kicks while yielding six to UIC.

Lipka needed a pair of saves to collect her ninth win of the season while Dicanio made four saves in the loss.

The Jaguars will continue Horizon League play on Saturday night (Sept. 30) when IUPUI hosts Green Bay at 4:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3 as Morgan Adcock (pxp) is on the call. The match is FREE for IUPUI students with a valid Crimson Card and adult tickets are just $5. Fans will be treated to a soccer doubleheader that day as the men's match with UIC will immediately follow the women's contest.
