INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team created chances and had opportunities, but was unable to capitalize as the Jaguars fell to in-state foe Valparaiso, 1-0 at Carroll Stadium on Tuesday night (Sept. 26). IUPUI missed a first half penalty kick opportunity and allowed the game-winner in the 51st minute on a decisive corner kick opportunity.

"The guys battled," Barnett said. "I thought the fight and the effort was there. I can't fault the effort and that's what is important to me. We made one too many mistakes to win the game and that's what college soccer is about. We didn't do enough to get the win."

Valparaiso (4-4-1) had the run of play to their liking in the early going, but couldn't solve the Jaguars' deep defensive third or redshirt freshman Tyler Shanahan, despite firing shots from all over the field in the opening 20 minutes. IUPUI (0-8) finally got the break it needed in the 27th minute when the Jaguars were awarded a penalty kick when Pedro Valladao's from the left side hit Alex Brown's left arm, earning an easy PK call. Junior Sam Gavin thundered a shot to the right of Valpo keeper Nacho Miras, who guessed correctly and got his right hand on the attempt before pouncing on the rebound to keep the Jaguars off the board.

Late in the first half, Shanahan made a highlight reel save, diving to his right to deflect a Rafael Mentzingen attempt just wide of frame, just before halftime. Valpo outshot IUPUI 10-4 in the first half, but the score remained tied at the break.

VU finally broke through in the 51st minute when Brown atoned for his earlier mistake and tallied his first goal of the year. Adan Garcia played a short corner to Chris Villalobos, who redirected a pass to Brown near the penalty spot. Brown hit a right-footed shot just inside the far post under Shanahan for his lone blemish of the night.

Despite Valpo dominating possession after halftime, IUPUI still had some quality builds, but few resulted in shot attempts.

Shanahan closed with a career-high 10 saves and faced a 23 shot onslaught. Villalobos led the VU attack with six attempts while Mentzingen had four tries. The Jags attempted five shots with Valladao firing a team-high two attempts. Miras needed two saves to record the shutout.

The Jaguars will be back at home on Saturday night (Sept. 30) when they host UIC in Horizon League play. That match will take place immediately following the women's match with Green Bay, scheduled for 4:00 p.m.. Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN3 as Morgan Adcock is on the call. In addition, IUPUI students are admitted for FREE with a valid Crimson Card and adult tickets are just $5.
