DETROIT - The IUPUI women's soccer team got an early strike and made it stand as the Jaguars ran their winning streak to seven straight with a 1-0 Horizon League win at Detroit on Saturday (Sept. 23). Senior
Hayley Shelton finished her second score of the year in the 13th minute off a
Krissy Kirkhoff assist to account for the day's only scoring. Sophomore goalkeeper
Sophia Lipka continued her hot play, registering her sixth shutout during the seven-game winning streak and her seventh shutout overall this season.Â
"We knew there were going to have a very direct style of play so we wanted to put the ball on the ground and move it," Shelton said. "That's what led to the goal. We got Krissy isolated on the center defenders and she beat them to the endline and slotted it across the goal line. I was able to put the ball in the back of the net.Â
"This was a true team effort all around."
Kirkhoff slid a cross under the arm of a challenging Marina Manzo across the endline where Shelton slid in to push the ball across, just ahead of Detroit's Carly Fiorido. Shelton's sixth career score stood as the Jaguars' defense continued its stingy play.Â
"Road games are always hard and we knew it wasn't going to be easy," Kirkhoff said. "We put one away early and kept the intensity."
IUPUI (8-3, 2-0 Horizon) was outshot 10-8, but Detroit (3-7-1, 0-2 Horizon) managed just three shots on goal. Lipka gobbled up those attempts without incident as the bulk of the Titans' attempts were from distance.Â
Detroit's best chance of the game came with just more than eight minutes to play when a UDM corner kick came free near the back post. However, Kelli Doyle hit a shot high from close range.Â
Offensively, Kirkhoff was a wrecking ball on the left side of the field and just missed finishing on a breakaway in the 17th minute, pushing a shot just wide of target. She had a team-high three shot attempts and both she and Shelton put two tries on frame.Â
Head Coach
Chris Johnson rotated plenty of bodies on Saturday as it was unseasonably warm with temps nearing 90. Freshman
Natalie McNally and sophomore
Jenna Sterr played heavy minutes in the defensive third while Shelton and
Valentine Pursey stayed on the field for nearly all 90 minutes.Â
With the win, IUPUIÂ continued to add to the program's longest winning streak since 2009 and improved to 5-1 on the road this season.Â
IUPUI will return home to host UIC on Wednesday night (Sept. 27) at 7:00 p.m. at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. That match will be broadcast on ESPN3.Â
