HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The IUPUI men's soccer team's doldrums continued on Saturday night (Sept. 23) as the Jaguars dropped a 3-0 decision at Northern Kentucky in Horizon League play. The Jags trailed 1-0 at the half and built some quality chances in the second half, but ultimately fell victim to the Norse, which ran it's unbeaten streak to seven.
"Tonight was another difficult result for our team," head coach
Brian Barnett said. "There continues to be a lack of execution on our part over the course of the game on both sides of the ball. All the credit in the world goes to Northern Kentucky; they are an organized and defensively stout group that does not give anything to your attack.
"Our team did well to earn five shots and five corners in the second half, but it was not enough to find ourselves on the positive side of this one."
NKU's Tom Suchecki headed home the winner in the 23rd minute, finishing off an assist from Wlademir Babaew. The Norse (5-1-3, 2-0-1 Horizon) maintained the 1-0 lead while holding IUPUI (0-7, 0-3 Horizon) to just one first half shot.
However, IUPUI had promising builds early in the second half, beginning with a
Pedro Valladao shot that was blocked for a corner kick in the 53rd minute. On the ensuing corner, Valladao had a header deflected away, resulting in another corner. On the second corner, junior
Nick Anderson fired wide right on an attempt.
NKU built a 2-0 lead in the 63rd minute when Calvin Murphy headed a shot past redshirt freshman
Tyler Shanahan for his first career score.
Trailing 2-0, Barnett was forced to push numbers forward, leaving the defensive group vulnerable. The Norse took advantage late as Felix Komolong scored on a shot from distance in the closing minutes.
Shanahan finished with three saves in his third career start while NKU keeper Jim Barkei had a save and assisted on the final goal of the night. Valladao had a team-high two shot attempts in the loss.
IUPUI will return home to host Valparaiso on Tuesday night (Sept. 26) at 7:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium. Admission is FREE for IUPUI students with a valid Crimson Card.
