INDIANAPOLIS - Senior
Sarah Jacobs and freshman
Jillian Steinbrink tallied goals and
Kamryn Benscoter added an assist as the IUPUI women's soccer team ran its winning streak to six with a 2-1 victory at Marian on Sunday night (Sept. 17). The Jags outshot the Knights 19-4 and put away a goal in each half to extend the program's longest winning streak since the 2009 season.
IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson tried his best to limit the starters' minutes, coming off a hard fought overtime decision on Friday night.
The Jags (7-3) got a definitive boost from the bench as Johnson opted to sub the majority of the field players in one fell swoop late in the first half. The new group broke through in the 39th minute as Steinbrink netted her first career score on a well placed header. Benscoter initiated the score with service from the right side, leading to Steinbrink's composed finish.
Senior
Hayley Shelton just missed breaking the ice earlier in the half, but had a shot hit off the bar and back on the field.
Marian, ranked No. 22 in NAIA, snapped the Jaguars' scoreless streak in the 59th minute when a 2-v-2 breakaway resulted in Maria Farmer lacing a shot past Lipka. The goal stopped Lipka's personal scoreless streak at a school record 508:29, eclipsing the mark of IUPUI Hall of Famer Jamie Farrell's 461:01, set in 2006.
However, IUPUI had an immediate answer coming in the form of a Jacobs free kick. Senior
Krissy Kirkhoff was fouled after attempting a shot from just outside the 18-yard box. On the ensuing restart, Jacobs drove a shot over a formidable wall of players and into the upper left-hand corner for the winner.
Kirkhoff attempted a game-high seven shots while
Miranda Ricks had three attempts, one of which hit off the bar in the second half. Lipka needed just one save to advance her record to 7-3 on the season. Marian (4-2) goalkeeper Brenna Malatestinic contributed six saves and Farmer had three of Marian's four shot attempts.
Freshman
Natalie McNally played a team-high 81 minutes while classmate
Morgan Rymer played 79 in the midfield. Seven different reserves played at least 25 minutes in the field, leading to some unique groupings and combinations at times.
IUPUI will be back in action next Saturday (Sept. 23) when the Jaguars face Detroit at 4:00 p.m. in a match that will be broadcast on ESPN3.
