GREEN BAY, Wisc. - The IUPUI volleyball team will be back in action, beginning on Friday night (Sept. 15), when the Jaguars face Cal Poly at the Green Bay Country Inn & Suites Classic. The Jags will face a tall task, competing against strong teams from Cal Poly (7-2) and North Dakota (13-1) over two days.
Head Coach
Steve Payne's team is coming off losses at Central Michigan and Dayton as part of a non-conference gauntlet the longtime IUPUI leader has laid out for his program. Senior
Kori Waelbroeck had a team-high 11 kills in the Jags' 3-0 loss on Dayton on Tuesday night (Sept. 12) to accompany 10 digs. Fellow senior
Jessica Helms had a team-high 12 digs in that contest.
For the year, Waelbroeck leads IUPUI (4-7) with 3.91 kills/set while senior
Gabby Fisher averages 2.43 kills/set. Junior
Maggie Gibson averages 9.84 assists/set and has been the Jaguars' most consistent attacker, hitting a team-high .292 in limited attempts. Defensively, Helms paces IUPUI with 4.72 digs/set from her libero spot. Junior
Abby Boatman is IUPUI's top blocker at 1.21 blocks/set and is followed closely by Gibson and
Haley Hoffman.
IUPUI is 3-0 in neutral site matches this season, having defeated Georgia Southern and Florida International in Fort Myers, Fla., before defeating Indiana State in Mt. Pleasant, Mich.. Amazingly, Payne's squad has yet to win a match in three sets but has three five-set victories this season.
SCOUTING CAL POLY: Cal Poly is 7-2 to start the season with its only losses coming on the road at No. 8 Washington and No. 14 Oregon. The Mustangs recently defeated No. 23 Wichita State, which won the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational earlier this season. The Cal Poly offense is led by sisters Torrey Van Winden and Adlee Van Winden. Torrey, a UCLA-transfer, comes in averaging 5.00 kills/set and hitting .352 for the season. Adlee is averaging 4.21 kills/set and hitting .258. Collectively, Cal Poly is hitting .286 for the year and Taylor Nelson is averaging 12.21 assists/set. Katherine Brouker headlines the back row at 3.66 digs/set.
SCOUTING NORTH DAKOTA: UND has won nine straight since an earlier season loss at Georgia Tech after starting the season 4-0. Faith Dooley keys the UND attack at 3.24 kills/set while Tamara Merseli knocks down 2.90 kills/set. Dooley provides a big block at 1.50 blocks/set while three North Dakota players average better than three digs/set, paced by Alivia Fraase's 3.80. North Dakota has been impressive defensively throughout the season, holding opponents to just .132 hitting in 14 matches.
