DAYTON, Ohio - The IUPUI volleyball team will be back on the court on Tuesday night (Sept. 12) when the Jaguars face Dayton (6-4) at 7:00 p.m.. IUPUI (4-6) split a pair of matches at Central Michigan this past weekend, defeating Indiana State in a five-setter before losing to host CMU in the finale.
The Jaguars moved to 2-1 in five-set matches with key in-state wins over ISU and Ball State.
Against CMU, freshman
Maddie Dean put down a career-high 11 kills to pace the Jags and senior
Gabby Fisher had 10 kills and six digs. Senior
Jessica Helms had a team-high 13 digs and junior setter
Maggie Gibson had 33 assists.
For the year, senior
Kori Waelbroeck averages a team-high 3.92 kills/set and has gotten the bulk of the team's swings with 472 attempts already this season. Fisher checks in at 2.50 kills/set and Dean averages 1.86 kills/set. Gibson, a UIndy-transfer, has acclimated well to the setter position at 9.90 assists/set.
Defensively, Helms (4.78 digs/set) and Gibson (2.80 digs/set) are tops on the team in digs while junior
Abby Boatman is the squad leader in blocks with 50 total.
As a team, IUPUI is hitting .181 for the season while opponents are hitting .220. The Jaguars have faced an incredibly tough slate in the season's early going, highlighted by matches against Wichita State, Marquette and Florida Gulf Coast.
ALL-TOURNAMENT ACCOLADES: Gibson collected All-Tournament Team honors last weekend at Central Michigan, totaling 91 assists and 23 digs in the Jaguars' two matches. Her 58 assists against Indiana State were a season-high.
QUOTABLE: "It was another hard fought win that us come through with a good fifth set to seal it with 11 kills. We are starting to put pieces in place and when we are in sync, we are a very good team," said Payne after Friday's win over Indiana State.
SCOUTING DAYTON: Dayton is 6-4 overall and 1-2 at home this season. The Flyers' lone home win was a 3-1 victory over Ohio and they've since dropped matches to Iowa State and Pitt in straight sets. Dayton comes in having won three of its past four matches with victories over Miami (Ohio), Seton Hall and Cincinnati sandwiched around a loss at Illinois State. Lauren Bruns leads the Dayton attack with 3.40 kills/set while Amber Erhahon is averaging 3.23 kills/set and hitting .449 for the season. Jane Emmenecker is the Flyers' setter, averaging 9.83 assists/set. Defensively, Margo Wolf is tops among their back row at 4.74 digs/set while Erhahon has been dynamic in the middle, posting 1.34 blocks/set.
INSIDE THE SERIES: IUPUI is 0-4 all-time against Dayton and 0-2 in matches played in Dayton. Dayton swept the Jaguars 3-0 in Indianapolis last season on Sept. 13. Prior to that, the teams hadn't met since 2006. IUPUI has won just two sets in the four matches between the two sides.
UP NEXT: The Jaguars will trek to Green Bay, Wisc., this weekend to face Cal Poly on Friday (Sept. 15) and North Dakota on Saturday (Sept. 16). Friday's match is slated for 6:00 p.m. while Saturday's contest will start at 2:00 p.m.
