INDIANAPOLIS – Senior
Kori Waelbroeck and sophomore
Haley Hoffman were announced as members of the 2017 Horizon League All-League Team as voted on by the conference's coaches on Monday (Nov. 14).
For Waelbroeck, this is the third-straight year that she has been named to an All-League Team, having taken home First Team All-Summit League the last two years. This is the first All-League award for Hoffman in her career.
"I think it is great that Kori [Waelbreock] and Haley [Hoffman] get recognized for their accomplishments throughout the whole season," said head coach
Steve Payne. "They really deserved this award."
Waelbroeck was the offensive leader for the Jags this season and was one of the best offensive players in the league as well. This season, the senior led the team with 3.78 kills/set, totaling 442 kills overall, while hitting .248. Her kills/set average was the second best in the Horizon League this season.
Waelbroeck was solid on the defensive end of the court as well, finishing third on the team in digs/set (2.59) and blocks/set (0.87). She finished the season with 20 kills in a match nine times, including five times in conference play. Her career-high 28 kills came against Wright State in the Jags first ever Horizon League match. Waelbroeck finished with double-digit kills in 14 of the 16 conference matches this season and had 12 double-doubles in league play, including five-straight between Oct. 14 and Oct. 28.
Waelbroeck has been one of the all-time greats in IUPUI history and caps off her four years sitting in sixth place on the school's all-time kills list with 1,183 kllls and fourth on the all-time blocks list with 286.
It is nice to see that Kori can go out her senior year with another all-conference accomplishment," said Payne.
Hoffman earned her first-career All-League honor after becoming one of the dominant middle blockers in the Horizon League. Hoffman averaged 1.09 blocks/set for the full season but increased that average to 1.26 blocks/set and was a catalyst for the Jags out-blocking every conference opponent this season. Her 1.26 blocks/set are tied for second in the league and her 83 total blocks and 12 solo blocks are also second on the league. She finished with at least three blocks in all but one conference match this season and had at least seven blocks in six conference matches.
Offensively, Hoffman had the sixth-best hitting percentage in league play for qualifying hitters, hitting .319 and finishing with 119 kills. On the season, Hoffman led the Jags with a .294 hitting percentage. Just as her defense did, her offense picked up in conference play as Hoffman finished with double-digit kills in five matches, including a career-high 14 kills on a .542 hitting clip against Oakland (Nov. 8). One of Hoffman's best offensive performances came against Milwaukee on Oct. 6, when she finished with 10 kills and hit .833.
"Haley, only in her sophomore year, showed great improvement all year and it was nice to see that recognized by the coaches," said Payne.
Waelbroeck, Hoffman and the rest of the Jags will play in their first round match against Northern Kentucky in the Horizon League Volleyball Championship on Friday (Nov. 17) at 3 p.m. That match can be watched live on ESPN3.
