BALANCED ATTACK LEADS JAGS TO SWEEP OVER MILWAUKEE

Sophomore Haley Hoffman's career-high 10 kills leads IUPUI to three-set win.

INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI used a balanced attack and sophomore Haley Hoffman finished with a career-high 10 kills as the Jags swept Milwaukee.

IUPUI (8-10, 4-1 Horizon) hit .284 on the night as a team and had five different players with seven or more kills led by Hoffman's career mark. Hoffman also hit .833 with no errors on her 12 attempts.

The Jags defense shutdown Milwaukee (8-11, 1-4 Horizon), holding the Panthers to a .115 hitting percentage and outblocking Milwaukee 10-2. Senior Jessica Helms led the Jags defense with 18 digs and Hoffman had seven kills.

It was the second-straight sweep for the Jags following a 3-0 win over Youngstown State on Sep. 30, after IUPUI had not won a three-set match all season.

"We came out really strong. It was tight in those last couple sets put we pulled those out," said head coach Steve Payne. "It was probably one of the most balanced attacks we have had with a lot of kills by everybody out there."

Behind Hoffman, senior Kori Waelbroeck and junior Elizabeth Scott each had nine kills while senior Gabby Fisher and junior Abby Boatman each posted seven. Maggie Gibson distributed the ball for 35 assists and added 10 digs for the Jags' only double-double.

"Every match we try do [have a balanced attack], so they can't just focus on one person," said Payne. "One or two people might be hot, but tonight we had everybody on the same page and Maggie [Gibson] was giving a good ball."

The Jags jumped out to an early lead, started by a kill by Scott. Scott then moved to the service line and led the Jags on a 7-1 run that included two kills by both Waelbroeck and Fisher. Fisher was also involved in a block with Boatman to cap the run with the Jags up 9-2.

After an ace by Fisher gave the Jags a 14-4 lead, Milwaukee tried to keep itself in the set pulling within six. The Panthers would never get closer than six the rest of the way as IUPUI took set one after a kill by Waelbroeck giving IUPUI a 25-16 win.

The Jags hit .342 in the opening frame, led by five kills from Scott, and finished with four blocks, holding the Panthers to a .135 hitting clip.

The second set started with back-and-forth action but Milwaukee used a 4-0 run, capped by a kill from Caitlin Schultz, to take an 8-4 lead and force the Jags to call an early timeout.

Coach Payne's timeout energized the Jags, who came out on a 4-1 run that included kills by Waelbroeck and Scott before forcing Milwaukee to use a timeout of its own with the score 9-8 in the Panthers favor. Milwaukee used a run of its own to take a 14-11 lead that featured kills by Bridget Wallenberger and Kylie Wilks.

The Jags matches the Panthers run with back-to-back blocks by Waelbroeck and Hoffman to tie the set 14-14.  The set continued with the teams trading points until Gibson gave the Jags an 18-17 lead with a strong kill, the Jags first lead since 2-1.  From there the Jags kept the lead and back-to-back kills by Hoffman ended the set 25-21.

IUPUI came out strong in set three jumping out to a 6-1 lead, led by two kills by Waelbroeck and blocks by Waelbroeck, Hoffman and Scott. Milwaukee would climb back in to the set pulling within one at 13-12 after two-straight kills by Wilks.

The Jags would answer with the duo of Fisher and Hoffman. IUPUI went on a 6-2 run fueled by three kills from Hoffman and two kills from Fisher to take an 18-14 lead. A service ace from Helms and block from Waelbroeck pushed the Jag's lead to 21-14. Kills from Boatman and Scott gave IUPUI match point but Milwaukee fought off three-straight and forced an IUPUI timeout.

IUPUI would end the match on the next point with a kill from Gibson to give the Jags the sweep over the Panthers.

"It is always good to win and to win in three is even better," said Payne." It is a good confidence boost and playing a good team like Green Bay tomorrow, we are hoping that that can continue."

Milwaukee was led by Wilks, who finished with a team-high 10 kills and added 11 digs. Defensively, Mykie Olsen led the Panthers with 18 digs.

The Jags return to the court tomorrow (Oct. 7) with a match against Green Bay starting a 4 p.m. at the Jungle. The game will also be streamed on ESPN3.
