INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team's collection of near misses grew by one on Tuesday night (Oct. 31) as the Jaguars were dropped by Fort Wayne at Carroll Stadium, 2-1. Halloween proved to be more tricks than treats as Fort Wayne's Jan Schumacher scored both Mastodon goals, including the game-winner in the 49th minute.

Senior Uriel Macias netted his team-high fourth goal of the year for the Jaguars in the game's second minute to account for the hosts offense. IUPUI (0-14-2) outshot the Mastodons, but put just four of 19 attempts on frame in defeat.

The Jaguars took a quick lead when Nick Anderson played a ball over the head of a Fort Wayne defender to Macias, who bounced a shot to the right of Mastodon goalkeeper Brendan Stangel for the game's first score.

IUPUI didn't make it stand though as Schumacher scored from closer quarters in the 8th minute for his second score of the year. The game stayed tied at 1-1 until halftime, despite the 'Dons outshooting IUPUI 12-8 before intermission.

Schumacher put the guests ahead in the 49th minute when he dug a ball out of a scrum and pinged a shot off the far post and past redshirt freshman Michael Buck for a go-ahead score. IUPUI dominated possession from there, outshooting Fort Wayne 11-4 after halftime.

However, the season-long scoring bugaboo continued to be a problem.

IUPUI's chances got better as the game wore on and Macias just missed tying the score on two different occasions. In the 82nd minute, Alan Aguilar fed a cross to Macias near the six-yard box, only to have the Jaguars' attacker fire high of frame. Less than a minute later, Macias drilled a shot off the left post and back on the field of play, catching an unlucky bounce.

In the 85th minute, sophomore Yan Souza put a brilliant strike on target, forcing Stangel to make a diving save, sprawling to his right. On the ensuing corner kick, freshman Cameron Haegele had an attempt blocked from the right side.

Aguilar had a pair of late attempts, but to no avail.

Buck and Stangel both finished with three saves while Macias attempted a game-high six shots, putting three on target. Oscar Uyamadu put up a team-high four shot attempts.

IUPUI will close the regular season on Friday (Nov. 3) when it faces Wright State in Horizon League play. That match will kickoff at 7:00 p.m. in Dayton, Ohio.
