DAYTON, Ohio - The IUPUI men's soccer team's 2017 season came to an end on Friday night (Nov. 3) as the Jaguars dropped a 2-0 decision in Horizon League play at Wright State. The host Raiders tallied the game-winner in the 21st minute and added insurance late in the contest.
"As a coach I am humbled by this group every time out," head coach
Brian Barnett said. "They are incredibly resilient and have responded to every challenge faced this season positively. While that doesn't show up on a record or a stat sheet; it does count for something intangible and says a lot about the young men on this team. I am thankful for the work, commitment and leadership of our two departing seniors.
"They will be missed."
Alec Philippe netted the winner and Jalim Bayo netted his first of the year in the 81st minute to cap the scoring.
Philippe took a feed from Stefan Rokvic to get a shot past redshirt freshman
Michael Buck for the game's first score. Wright State (10-6-1, 6-3 Horizon) outshot the Jaguars 12-3 in the first half and had a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
IUPUI (0-15-2, 0-9 Horizon) showed some resolve, building some good scoring chances early in the second half. Recent Horizon League All-Academic honoree
Alan Aguilar pushed a shot wide in the 66th minute and junior
Sean Siasia just missed tying the score in the 74th minute, having a shot cleared off the back line by a WSU defender. A minute later, junior
Sam Gavin hit a restart high of target in the 75th minute.
With the Jaguars pushing numbers forward in an effort to equalize, the Raiders got in behind with Bayo contributing the late insurance.
IUPUI put heat on late with senior
Uriel Macias getting two late attempts and Gavin has a shot on goal late in regulation. However, IUPUI was blanked for the tenth time this season.
Wright State will advance with the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Horizon League Tournament while IUPUI will be on the outside looking in. Barnett's team will graduate a pair of seniors in Macias and
Harold Agyeman-Prempeh. Macias had a team-high four goals this season while Agyeman-Prempeh was one of two players to start all 17 matches and was second on the team in minutes played.
