INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI senior
Kori Waelbroeck has been announced as one of 30 candidates for the volleyball Senior CLASS Award Tuesday (Oct. 3). The award honors the attributes of senior student-athletes in four areas; community, classroom, character and competition.
"Kori embodies everything there is about being a student-athlete," said head coach
Steve Payne. "She is a great example not just on the court but off the court with everything that she has done in the classroom and in the community. Being named a top-100 student at IUPUI last year while also being named All-Summit League just shows how she deserves to be recognized for this great honor."
In the classroom, Waelbroeck has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA while majoring in community health and minoring in sociology. She has been named to the IUPUI Dean's list ever semester of her college career while voted Academic All-Summit League in 2016. She was also named a Summit League Academic Honor Roll Distinguished Scholar three times.
Waelbroeck has also given back to her community while at IUPUI spending time as an academic mentor at the Bepko Learning Center, bettering the academic development of her peers by applying collaborative learning techiniques and facilitating the group experience.
She has also volunteered at the IUPUI Student Outreach Clinic, which is a free clinic run out of the Neighborhood Fellowship Church on Indianapolis's near east side. Waelbroeck has also spent time mentoring students at Cold Spring Elementary and has been a frequent guest reader for the Jags Reading Club.
On the court, Waelbroeck is the offensive leader for the Jags this season and is second in the Horizon League, averaging 3.87 kills/set including a career-high 28 kills in a five-set win against Wright State on Sept. 22. The Evansville native also has posted eight double-doubles on the season.
She is also a two-time All-Summit League performer and as a junior ranked fourth in the league with 389 kills. As a sophomore, Waelbroeck's .317 hitting percentage was sixth in the Summit League.
An acronym for
Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship in December.
