INDIANAPOLIS – Using its best offensive performance and best defensive performance of the season, IUPUI made quick work of Youngstown State in a 3-0 sweep on Friday (Oct. 27) night. The win was the fourth-straight for the Jags, the longest winning steak of their season.
The Jags (13-11, 9-2 Horizon) hit over .300 for the first time this season, posting a .347 hitting clip. IUPUI started slow, hitting .250 in the first set but increased that as the match went along, hitting .375 in the second and .444 in the third. IUPUI only committed eight attack errors as a team, another season best.
Individually,
Kori Waelbroeck led the Jags with 11 kills on a .476 hitting percentage, and
Gabby Fisher finished with nine.
Haley Hoffman added 7 kills on a .500 hitting percentage.
Defensively the Jags stifled Youngstown State (7-18, 0-11 Horizon). IUPUI forced the Penguins to hit .056, the lowest hitting percentage the Jags have allowed this season. IUPUI out-blocked Youngstown State 8-2 and finished with 53 digs to Youngstown State's 43.
Maggie Gibson led the Jags with 14 digs and added 30 assists for a double-double.
Jessica Helms posted 11 digs and Waelbrock also finished with a double-double, adding 10 digs.
IUPUI got off to a hot start, taking the first six points of the opening frame finished with a block by Hoffman and Elizabeth Scott. Attack errors helped get the Penguins back in the set pulling within one at 10-9.
The conference leader in aces, Youngstown State, used its second ace of the set to tie it at 13. Another ace and the Jags found themselves down 16-15.
IUPUI came back with a 6-0 run featuring two kills by both Waelbroeck and Fisher. After a kill by Gibson, the Jags ended the set with an ace and a Youngstown State attack error.
The second stanza started with the teams trading points until IUPUI opened a three-point lead after an
Abby Boatman kill. The Jags then pushed the lead to five with a 5-1 run as Scott had a kill and an ace.
Youngstown State scored the first point out of the media timeout but IUPUI responded with the next three as Fisher and Boatman finished off points. Back-to-back kills from Fisher pushed the Jags lead to eight, 20-12.
Kills from Waelbroeck gave IUPUI a 25-15 set win heading in to the intermission.
IUPUI came out on fire in the third set winning the first five points on the set and completing a 10-2 run with a kill from Gibson. The Jags also got back-to-back blocks from Hoffman, Fisher and Waelbroeck during the run.
The Jags defense continued to dominate the set opening up an 11-point lead after a block from Hoffman and Waelbroeck and an error from the Penguins. Youngstown would not get any closer as IUPUI got a kill and an ace from Waelbroeck and closed out the match with a 25-12 set win.
IUPUI is back on the court on Saturday (Oct. 28) when they take on Cleveland State in the Jungle at 4 p.m.
