INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team played a typically stingy Eastern Illinois squad to a 1-1 double overtime draw at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 25). IUPUI (0-12-2) fell behind in the game's fifth minute, but got even in the 64th on a
Uriel Macias header.
IUPUI outshot the Panthers 20-13 and 5-4 on goal as the Jaguars have continued to show life down the home stretch of the season.
"Give credit to the Eastern Illinois student-athletes. When you're playing at 2:00 p.m. on a Wednesday afternoon on the road, you have to create your own momentum and they absolutely did that," head coach
Brian Barnett said. "To that end, you have to give credit to our guys too as we were able to get equal and continued to create opportunities to find the game-winner."
The IUPUI defense gave EIU's Cole Harkrader too much time and space and the Panthers' defender buried a shot in the game's fifth minute. EIU (3-7-6) held the ball for nearly the entire opening four-plus minutes before Edgar Mesa tapped a pass to Harkrader, who had an unimpeded look from just beyond the 18 for his first score of the season.
From there, IUPUI turned the field in it's favor.
The Jags possessed for much of the first half, getting quality service from
Alan Aguilar and
Gianni Catenacci on the outsides. The Jaguars' best scoring opportunity came in the ninth minute after
Nick Anderson fed a long pass into Macias, deep in EIU territory. Macias turned and fired a bullet that EIU keeper Ben Stone had to double clutch before securing.
In the 58th minute, the Jags appeared to have a great opportunity to draw even when
Yan Souza setup his fellow Brazilian
Pedro Valladao for a clean look from the left side. Valladao had Stone frozen on the back line, but pushed his shot just wide of the far post.
IUPUI finally got even in the 64th on a restart as
Sam Gavin sent a long ball into a scrum of bodies. Macias was able to climb the ladder and easily redirect a shot past Stone for his team-high third score of the year.
Both sides opened up the attack late in an effort to get the win.
EIU's Shady Omar tested redshirt freshman
Michael Buck from distance in the 74th minute, forcing the IUPUI netminder to tip the ball over the bar. Macias tested Stone again in the opening minute of the first overtime, but directed a header right at the Panthers' reserve keeper. IUPUI had another flurry late in the first overtime as
Harold Agyeman-Prempeh had a shot from the right side knocked down and Valladao fired the rebound attempt high of target.
In the second overtime, junior attacker
Sean Siasia got loose against Stone twice, only to see the EIU keeper make stops in the 104th and 106th minutes. On the first, Siasia rolled a shot right at the keeper but on the second effort, Stone worked to his right to deflect the shot wide of the goal before it was knocked over the endline for a goal kick.
IUPUI attempted a season-high 20 shots with Valladao getting six attempts off the bench and Macias firing five, including three on frame. Harkrader led EIU with three attempts.
The match was IUPUI's third overtime game in the past five outings as Buck lowered his goals against average to 1.47 on the year.
IUPUI will be back in action on Saturday when the Jaguars trek to Milwaukee to face the Panthers in Horizon League play. That match will start at 8:00 p.m. Eastern at Milwaukee's Engelmann Stadium.
