ROCHESTER, Mich. - The IUPUI women's soccer team allowed a pair of early goals and never fully recovered as the Jaguars dropped a 2-1 decision at Oakland in Horizon League play on Saturday (Oct. 21). Senior
Krissy Kirkhoff netted her sixth tally of the year in the game's 80th minute off a
Miranda Ricks assist to account for the Jaguars' lone score.
Oakland (3-13-1, 3-5 Horizon) wasted little time in building a lead, going ahead in the fifth minute when Vanessa Ogbonna netted her second score of the year. OU keeper Sophia Braun boomed a kick beyond midfield to Ogbonna, who worked her way past the Jaguars defense before getting a shot past freshman netminder
Skylar England.
The Golden Grizzlies made it 2-0 in the 15th minute when Jenny Rosonke tallied off assists from Vlad Gurovski and Emma Voelker.
Despite going down a pair of goals, IUPUI (13-5, 6-2 Horizon) possessed well and built scoring chances, ultimately outshooting Oakland 9-5 and earning six corner kicks.
Senior
Hayley Shelton had an unlucky stretch early in the second half when she had an initial attempt hit the post and a follow-up try was stopped by Braun for her lone save of the day. Kirkhoff and freshman
Valentine Pursey continued to work deep into Oakland territory before the former finally scratched in the 80th minute.
Ricks collected her second assist of the season, setting up Kirkhoff's 29th career score.
However, that would be IUPUI's final shot attempt of the match, despite earning a pair of corner kicks in the closing minutes.
Kirkhoff paced the Jags with three shot attempts while Shelton had a pair.
IUPUI will return home to host Northern Kentucky on Friday (Oct. 27) at 7:00 p.m. at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. That match is FREE for IUPUI students and adult tickets are just $5. IUPUI will honor its senior class immediately afterwards as part of the annual Senior Night festivities.
