INDIANAPOLIS - With two of the Horizon League's best teams squared off inside Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Friday night (Oct. 27), the showdown lived up to the advance billing as IUPUI and Northern Kentucky played to an evenly fought 1-1 double overtime draw in the regular season finale. With the result, NKU (9-5-2, 6-1-2 Horizon) captured the No. 2 seed and a bye into the semifinals in the upcoming Horizon League Tournament while IUPUI (13-5-1, 6-2-1 Horizon) closes as the No. 3 seed and will host a quarterfinals matchup against Cleveland State on Monday night (Oct. 30).
Freshman
Valentine Pursey scored the game's first goal in the 83rd minute on Friday night (Oct. 27) before NKU's Macy Hamblin answered less than two minutes later. The game featured a collection of highlight reel saves, largely from sophomore
Sophia Lipka, as she made a strong return to the Jaguars' starting lineup.
IUPUI was outplayed in the opening half, but turned in the field at the start of the second half, getting five corner kicks in the opening 11 minutes after intermission. Senior
Krissy Kirkhoff nearly tucked one of the corners in and
Miranda Ricks had a shot go just wide of frame.
IUPUI finally took the lead in the 83rd minute after Kirkhoff drew a foul on the edge of the NKU 18-yard box. On the ensuing free kick, senior
Hayley Shelton flared a ball in among the scrum where Pursey was able to loop a header just over NKU keeper for her ninth score of the season. While the joy was palpable along the IUPUI sideline, the lead was short lived as Macy Hamblin got the Norse even with a brilliant strike in the 85th minute.
Jessica Frey fed a pass into Hamblin, who hammered a shot past Lipka for her tenth tally of the year.
Lipka, who had made at least three incredible stops to keep the Jags in the match, had no chance at stopping the bullet hit to her right.
In overtime, IUPUI got early attempts from Ricks and Kirkhoff in the first period while NKU's Payton Naylor was stopped on the doorstep in the 102nd minute.
Lipka finished with eight saves after missing the Jaguars' last four matches, while Lohmann made six stops for the Norse. Kirkhoff fired a game-high six shots while Hamblin had five and played all 110 minutes in the field.
