Jessica Helms has been named Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week anchoring the Jags defense on route to a 1-1 weekend in conference play. This is the second time this season Helms has won the award, being named defensive player of the week on Aug. 28.
The Muncie, Ind., native averaged 5.57 digs/set over the weekend with 19 against Cleveland State and 20 in a three-set win against Youngstown State. It was the fifth time this season Helms has reached the 20-dig mark. She is currently fourth in the conference play averaging 4.56 digs/set. She also finished the week with 26 receptions and no errors.
She is the only player in the Horizon League to repeat as a player of the week this season and the Jags now have won back-to-back weekly awards after teammate
Kori Waelbroeck was named offensive player of the week last week.
The Jags will be back on the court Friday (Oct. 6) when they play host to Milwaukee at 6 p.m. and will continue the homestand on Saturday (Oct. 7) with a match against Green Bay that starts at 4 p.m.
