EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The IUPUI men's soccer team will step out of league play on Wednesday night (Oct. 18) when the Jaguars head west to face SIUE at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.
Head Coach
Brian Barnett's team is still on the quest for a first result of the season, although the Jags have been close of late, losing by a one goal margin in three of the past four matches. On Sunday (Oct. 15), IUPUI (0-11, 0-6 Horizon) yielded a goal on an unlucky bounce late in the first half as the Jaguars conceded a score on a corner kick. In the match prior to that, IUPUI fell on the road at Detroit in overtime, 2-1.
For the season, senior
Uriel Macias leads the IUPUI attack with a pair of goals and an assist and sophomore
Alan Aguilar has two assists. Sophomore
Pedro Valladao has a goal and an assist.
Redshirt freshman
Michael Buck has emerged as the Jaguars' No. 1 keeper, posting a 1.81 goals against average and 17 saves in his six starts. Buck has allowed just three goals in the Jaguars' last two games.
On the field, freshman
Tommy Patacca has played virtually every minute this season while senior
Harold Agyeman-Prempeh is second in line, having split time between the back third and midfield spots. Only four players - Agyeman-Prempeh, Patacca,
Nick Anderson and
Tyler Gainer - have started all 11 matches this season.
QUOTABLE: "Goals always change the complexion of games, whichever way they come. When you go into halftime equal at 1-1, everything is different from that standpoint earlier. They don't have to do as much in the second half up 1-0. They're able to sit in and keep their defensive shape much tighter," Barnett said after Sunday's 1-0 loss to Belmont.
FORMER JAG EARNS MLS SPOT: After a long uphill climb, former IUPUI goalkeeper Eduardo Cortes recently inked a deal with the MLS FC Dallas as the team's third goalkeeper. He has yet to make his MLS debut, training as the team's third in line.
SCOUTING SIUE: SIUE is 6-7-0 overall and 5-3 at home this season. The Cougars had won three straight matches prior to losing at No. 12 Akron this past weekend, 3-1. Before that, SIUE had consecutive victories over Milwaukee, Bowling Green and Butler. Jorge Gonzalez leads SIUE with five goals and two assists while Lachlan McLean has four goals. Eric Tejada has a team-high five assists from the defensive third. In goal, Kyle Dal Santo has played every minute and has a 1.06 goals against average and .725 save percentage with five shutouts.
INSIDE THE SERIES: IUPUI is 1-2 all-time against SIUE with the series having begun in 2009. The Jaguars are 1-1 in games played in Edwardsville, having defeated the Cougars in 2010 (2-1) and falling on the road last season (3-0).
UP NEXT: IUPUI will host Green Bay at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 22 as Andrew Kappes will be on the call on ESPN3. Agyeman-Prempeh and Macias will be recognized that day as part of Senior Day festivities.
