Krissy Kirkhoff/Skylar England Postgame
INDIANAPOLIS - Senior
Krissy Kirkhoff put away a goal in each half as the IUPUI women's soccer team extended its winning streak to 12 straight, matching the program record, with a 2-1 win over Fort Wayne on Sunday (Oct. 15). Kirkhoff took over as the program's all-time points leader, upping her career total to 77 as she tallied in the 25th and 62nd minutes of the win.
Junior
Jessica Flores setup her first score of the game and the game-winner was an unassisted tally.
"Fort Wayne is always a tough team to play. We knew coming into the game that we had to work hard and take it to them the first 10 minutes," Kirkhoff said.
Kirkhoff put the Jaguars (13-3) on the board, hitting a diagonal shot past Fort Wayne goalkeeper Emma Gaggioli, into the right side of the net for her fourth goal of the year and school record 75th career point.
The lead lasted only 44 seconds though as Fort Wayne's Jessica Schoenfeldt deposited her third score of the year, also in the 25th minute. Kendall Quinn sent a cross in from the right side to Schoenfeldt, who volleyed a shot over England from eight yards out.
Despite a distinct shot advantage, aided in part by a stiff wind directly into Fort Wayne's goal, the Jags had to settle for a 1-1 score at the break. IUPUI played much of the final stages of the first half down a player as head coach
Chris Johnson had subbed all 10 starting field players off near the midpoint of the half. So when
Jessi Cowen suffered an injury in front of the team bench with just more than 10 minutes left before intermission, Johnson was relegated to playing with nine field players with no healthy bodies at his disposal.
When the starters got back on the field to start the second half, it was business as usual as the Jaguars controlled possession and tempo. It ultimately resulted in Kirkhoff's fifth score of the year in the 62nd minute as she took advantage of an loose ball deep in Fort Wayne territory and carried it forward before rolling a shot inside the far post.
The IUPUI defense made it stand from there, keeping Fort Wayne (1-13) at bay. England finished with four saves while Gaggioli had 13 stops for the guests.
"I was a little nervous at first, but now I'm starting to mesh with the team and starting to get some confidence now," England said of her second career start in place of an injured
Sophia Lipka. "All I knew, once I got cleared (to play), I didn't want to take anything else for granted, so I just worked harder than I ever did.
"(The wind) played a huge factor. Anytime I saw someone was coming in with a long ball I knew there was a chance it could come in and go over me because it could hold up in the air."
Kirkhoff led the attack with seven shot attempts, putting four on frame. She surpassed Megan Hock's school record of 74 career points with her first half tally.
"It was awesome. I couldn't do it without my team," Kirkhoff said.
IUPUI attempted a season-high 24 shots, putting 16 on target.
Hayley Shelton and
Miranda Ricks each had three shot attempts with all three of Ricks' being on target.
Johnson took the final non-conference game as an opportunity to play the bulk of the roster as 21 different players saw at least 20 minutes. Sophomore back
Jenna Sterr played a team-high 64 minutes in the back third while senior
Leia Peterman played 60 minutes.
IUPUI will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 18 when the Jags travel north for a key Horizon League showdown at Milwaukee at 5:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN3.
