INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI will be looking to bounce back from a tough loss to Oakland as the Jags will be traveling to Chicago to take on UIC on Saturday (Oct. 14) at 5 p.m.
Head coach
Steve Payne's squad had their three-game winning streak snapped by the Golden Grizzlies and are currently in a tie at the top of the Horizon League with Oakland at 5-2 in league play.
The Jags will be looking to bounce back from its worst offensive performance in conference play this year when they take on the Flames. After taking on one of the best defenses in the league in Oakland, there could be some relief in the game against UIC. UIC sits seventh in the league in both blocks and digs per set.
The offense remains led by senior
Kori Waelbroeck who is tops on the squad with 3.75 kills/set. Waelbroeck is also third on the team with a .231 hitting percentage. Fellow senior
Gabby Fisher is second on the team with 2.47 kills/set. The versatile
Maggie Gibson has been all over the court for Coach Payne, leading the team in hitting percentage (.279), assists per set (10.03) and is second in digs per set (2.97).
On defense, the Jags remain second in the Horizon League in blocks per set (2.73) and fourth in digs per set (16.92). At the net,
Abby Boatman leads the defense with 1.06 blocks/set and #Haley Hoffman is right behind with 1.04 blocks/set. Senior
Jessica Helms is the leader on the back row with 4.45 digs/set.
GIBSON EARNS WEEKLY HONOR
For the third-straight week IUPUI had a player take home a weekly honor from the Horizon League. This week, Gibson earned Offensive Player of the Week after guiding the well-balanced attack for the Jags against Milwaukee and Green Bay. She finished with week with 81 assists, an average of 11.57 per set. She also hit .538 with eight kills and only one error and posted double-doubles in both matching, reaching 10 kills each time.
WAELBROECK NAMED SENIOR CLASS NOMINEE
Waelbroeck was named one of 30 senior volleyball student-athletes to be
nominated for the Senior CLASS Award. The award honors the attributes of senior student-athletes in four areas; community, classroom, character and competition. The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot.
WAELBROECK REACHES 1,000
With her final kill in the 3-0 win over Youngstown State, Kori Waelbroeck notched her 1,000
th career kill. Waelbroeck will move in to 9
th all-time in team history with seven more kills, passing Michelle Sobocinski (1,036).
SCOUTING OAKLAND: UIC (13-6, 4-2 Horizon) will take on Oakland on Friday, October 13 before playing the Jags. In Horizon League play the Flames are one of the top offensive teams, tied for first in hitting percentage (.249), and second in kills per set (14.40) and assists per set (13.44).Kyisha Hunt is second in Horizon League play with 3.88 kills/set and Ali Witt is second in hitting percentage (.368). UIC splits setting duties with a one-two punch from Nicole Johnson (6.88 assists/set) and Kaliegh Skopal (5.40 assists/set). Both of those marks are in the top ten in Horizon League play.
INSIDE THE SERIES-
vs. UIC: IUPUI enters the series looking for its first win against UIC. The Jags are 0-5 against the Flames all-time with their last meeting a five-set loss in 2003 in Chicago.
UP NEXT: IUPUI will hit the road over next weekend with a match on Saturday (Oct. 21) against Wright State at 4 p.m. and a Sunday tilt against Northern Kentucky at 2 p.m. Both of those matches will be broadcast on ESPN3.
