JAGS OFFENSE FALTERS IN 3-0 LOSS TO OAKLAND

IUPUI hit a conference season low .125 in the sweep by the Golden Grizzlies.

INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI's offense never got on track and the defense could not stop Oakland's offense as the Jags fell in straight sets on Wednesday (Oct. 11) night.

Head Coach Steve Payne postgame interview

IUPUI (9-11, 5-2 Horizon) was held to its lowest hitting percentage (.125) and fewest kills (29) in conference play this season. The Jags could not get past an Oakland block that came in to the match with a conference-leading 3.09 blocks/set average and when they did Oakland found a way to dig the ball, out-digging IUPUI 64-41.

Kori Waelbroeck finished with a team-high eight kills, Maddie Dean added six and Elizabeth Scott finished with five. Maggie Gibson delivered 23 assists and tied for the team-high with seven digs with Waelbroeck and Scott.

The Oakland (10-9, 5-2 Horizon) offense came in to the match hitting .245 and bettered that percentage by hitting .276 on the night. Conference leader Darien Brandel led the Golden Grizzlies with 13 kills and added 10 digs for a double-double. Sammy Condon was also in double digits for Oakland with 10 kills. Jordan Lentz tallied 40 assists while adding six kills of her own.

IUPUI's lone bright spot came in their net defense where the Jags out-blocked Oakland nine to five with Haley Hoffman leading the way for IUPUI with seven blocks.

The first set started back-and-forth with the teams trading points until Oakland used a 5-1 run to take a 12-8 lead and force an IUPUI timeout. The Golden Grizzlies run was finally ended as a block by Waelbroeck and Hoffman made it 14-9.

Oakland continued to maintain the lead though IUPUI cut the lead to four after kills by Scott and Waelbroeck. After that it was all Oakland, using a 6-1 run to end the set 25-16.

Set two started in the same fashion as the first with no team having more than a one-point lead until Oakland grabbed an 8-6 lead off of a kill by Aleksandra Malek. The Jags quickly battled back to tie the set at eight after a big solo block from Scott and Gibson gave the Jags a 10-9 lead after an ace.

After a block by Waelbrock and Hoffman gave IUPUI an 11-10 lead, Oakland rattled off seven-straight points. After Oakland took a 21-14 lead, the Jags tried to claw their way back in to the set forcing a timeout after a Gibson kill made the score 22-18.

The comeback in the set would fall short and IUPUI would fin itself in a 2-0 hole at the break after Oakland took the set 25-20.

With their backs against the wall, IUPUI came out in set three playing with urgency. Kills from Hoffman and Waelbroeck combined with two blocks from the pair gave the Jags an early 5-2 lead and forced a timeout. After taking an 11-7 lead on a Scott kill, Oakland forced IUPUI to call a timeout scoring the next four to tie the set.

The Golden Grizzlies continued their run scoring five of the next seven points to grab a 16-13 lead after two kills from Bandel and an ace from Wightman. Oakland closed out the match on a kill from Jamie Walling, winning set three 25-18.

IUPUI's begins a three-game road trip with its first match coming on Saturday, October 14 at UIC. That match will start at 5 p.m. and be broadcast on ESPN3.
