INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI volleyball team (2-5) heads back out on the road for another challenging preseason tournament this weekend (Sep. 9-10) in Springfield, Missouri, where the Jags will take part in the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational. The Jaguars are slated for four matches, starting with Ohio State (5-1) and Green Bay (5-0) Friday, before finishing with McNeese State (2-6) and Missouri State (3-3) Saturday. The match against Missouri State will air on ESPN 3 at 8 p.m. EST.
The Jags have been led this season by
Kori Waelbroeck, who has 92 kills through seven matches and is averaging 3.83 kills per set.
Logan Walling has 24 total blocks, including five solo, while
Alexis Mapes has 238 assists, averaging 9.92 per set.
Jessica Helms has a team-high 76 digs.
IUPUI opened the season with a loss to Duquesne (Aug. 27) in four sets before beating Central Michigan (Aug. 28) in a straight-set sweep the following day for their first win. They've since beat Ball State in four sets (Aug. 31) for their only two victories this season.
Friday's matchups feature a combined 10-1 record for their opponents, with the lone loss for Ohio State coming against Brigham Young in five sets. The Buckeyes started the year by sweeping the opposition at the North Texas Challenge, taking down Texas State, North Texas and Texas A&M. Green Bay didn't drop a set in their opening season tournament, as they defeated Summit League-foe South Dakota State, Eastern Illinois and Stephen F. Austin in sweeps. At the SIUE tournament, they went to five against the host team before winning it, while they swept Evansville to close it out.
McNeese State salvaged a win in the final match of the Southern Miss Invitational to start the year, defeating Grambling following losses to Southern Miss and Tulane. Other matches for the Cowgirls have included a pair of contests against SEC opponents, with losses coming against Mississippi State and Ole Miss. Most recently, the Cowgirls defeated UL-Lafayette in Louisiana on Tuesday (Sep. 6). Host team Missouri State has already faced three top-25 ranked opponents, going 1-2 across the contests. They defeated 14th ranked Illinois in Champaign, Illinois, before dropping back-to-back matches to 15th ranked Hawaii and 8th ranked UCLA in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The tournament marks the third of four preseason tournaments the Jags are participating in before they begin Summit League play on September 23.
